The constraints are large: up to 200,000 cities, 200,000 roads, and up to 200,000 total teleport entries. This immediately rules out any approach that tries to explicitly construct all teleport edges between cities sharing the same type, because in the worst case a single teleport type could appear in many cities, leading to quadratic behavior.

A naive shortest path like Dijkstra over explicitly expanded teleport edges would explode in both memory and time.

A subtle edge case comes from teleport types that appear in many cities. For example, if every city has teleport type 1, then from every city we could “jump” to every other city, but at different costs per origin. A naive expansion would require O(n²) edges.

Approaches

The brute force idea is to model every teleport as an edge between all pairs of cities sharing the same type. For each type t, if it appears in cities c1, c2, ..., ck, we would connect every pair (ci, cj) with directed edges of cost equal to the outgoing cost from ci and from cj respectively. Running Dijkstra on this expanded graph would be correct, because it fully represents all allowed moves.

The problem is that this expansion creates O(∑ k_t²) edges, which in the worst case becomes O(n²), far beyond limits.

The key observation is that we never actually need explicit pairwise teleport edges. From a city u using type t, we want to reach any other city v that also has type t, paying cost cost(u, t). If we introduce a virtual node per teleport type, we can separate “choosing destination city” from “paying the departure cost”.

For each type t, we introduce a super-node T_t. From every city u that has type t, we add an edge from u to T_t with cost cost(u, t). From T_t, we add zero-cost edges to all cities that also contain type t. This transforms teleportation into a two-step process: pay once to enter the type node, then freely exit to any city supporting it.

Now the graph becomes a standard shortest path problem. The remaining challenge is that even this construction still seems large, because each type node connects to many cities. However, we never explicitly traverse all outgoing zero edges from a type node in Dijkstra. Instead, we process them lazily, effectively “relaxing” all cities of a type only once when needed.

This is equivalent to treating each teleport type as a set relaxation operation, similar to multi-source BFS but weighted.

We then run Dijkstra over a graph consisting of cities plus type nodes, but carefully ensure each type node is expanded at most once, so total complexity stays linear in the number of teleport entries.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We build a graph with two kinds of nodes: city nodes and teleport-type nodes.

  1. We assign an index to each teleport type node in addition to the n cities. These type nodes act as intermediaries that collect all cities sharing the same teleport type.
  2. For every road between cities u and v with cost c, we add it as a normal undirected edge. This part is unchanged.
  3. For each teleport entry (city u, type t, cost c), we add a directed edge from city u to type node T_t with weight c. This represents paying the cost to activate that teleport from u.
  4. We also record membership: each type node T_t maintains a list of all cities that contain type t. This is not an edge list used directly in Dijkstra relaxation, but a structure we will expand only once.
  5. We run Dijkstra starting from city 1. Distance array includes both cities and type nodes, initialized to infinity except dist[1] = 0.
  6. When we pop a city u from the priority queue, we relax all outgoing road edges normally.
  7. When we first reach a type node T_t with some distance, we expand it once: for every city v in its list, we attempt to relax dist[v] = min(dist[v], dist[T_t]). After expansion, we mark the type as processed so we never expand it again.
  8. We also allow transitions from city u to T_t via teleport edges, which are handled naturally by Dijkstra when relaxing edges of step 3.

The important detail is that type nodes are only expanded once, meaning each city in a teleport group is relaxed at most once per type.

Why it works

The invariant is that whenever a node is popped from the priority queue, its distance is already the smallest possible among all paths that could reach it. For city nodes this follows standard Dijkstra correctness.

For type nodes, the first time we reach T_t corresponds to the minimum possible cost of activating that teleport type from any city reachable so far. Expanding it immediately to all member cities simulates taking that teleport from the best possible entry point.

Because we only expand each type once, we ensure that we are not recomputing relaxations for worse entry points later. Any later arrival to T_t cannot improve the already discovered best activation cost, so skipping repeated expansions preserves correctness while preventing quadratic blow-up.

The implementation keeps a standard Dijkstra over an augmented graph. Cities are 1 through n, and teleport-type nodes are appended after them.

Road edges are inserted directly into adjacency lists. Teleport edges from cities to type nodes are stored separately per city.

A key subtlety is expansion of type nodes. When a type node is popped for the first time, we propagate its distance to all cities containing that type. We ensure this happens only once using a set, otherwise repeated expansions would blow up time.

Edge Cases

One important edge case is when a teleport type exists in only one city. In that case, teleportation is useless and the algorithm must not try to expand it. The implementation naturally handles this because the type node will only connect back to a single city, and no improvement occurs beyond a self-loop-like relaxation.

Another edge case is when teleport cost is extremely high compared to roads. The algorithm still behaves correctly because Dijkstra always compares all alternatives uniformly, and teleport edges are just normal weighted transitions.
