Approaches

A direct brute-force approach would try every possible starting location, every possible direction, every possible path length, and then enumerate all walks on that path. This is correct because it follows the definition exactly. However, the number of possible walks grows exponentially. A length m walk has up to two choices at every step, so the search space is roughly O(2^m), which is impossible when m = 2000.

The structure of the problem gives a much better way to count. The cycle itself only contributes a multiplication factor: after counting walks on one fixed line segment, we can choose where that segment starts and whether it goes clockwise or counter-clockwise.

The remaining task is counting walks on a line. We only need to know the current distance from the starting endpoint. After i moves, if we are at position j, the next move either increases j or decreases j. We cannot go below zero or above the maximum allowed distance. Since we only care whether the far endpoint has been reached, we can instead compute walks for every possible maximum distance and add the walks that return to zero.

The useful observation is that a walk of length i ending at position j can be computed from the previous length. The transition only depends on neighboring positions, so a simple dynamic programming table is enough. We build states for all lengths up to m, keeping the current distance. Positions above k are unnecessary because the chosen segment cannot be longer than k.

After computing these values, the number of valid walks is the sum of all lengths where the walk is back at position 0 and has a positive maximum distance. The DP state can be interpreted as a walk that has already reached the required endpoint because every position j represents the endpoint of the chosen segment. The table size is based on min(k, m) rather than k directly. Even if k is huge, the walk cannot reach a distance greater than m, so those states would never contribute.

Edge Cases

When the maximum walk length is too small, the DP naturally leaves all returning states as zero. In 2 1 1, the only possible movement is from one side to the other, but the walker cannot return, so the answer stays zero.
