Problem Understanding

The key is to change the way we look at a house. For a house (r, c), define an interval:

[c, r + c]

A tower covering this house must choose a left boundary not larger than c and a right boundary not smaller than r + c. The cost of that tower is exactly the length of the chosen covering interval. So covering a collection of houses is equivalent to covering their intervals with one larger interval. Its cost is the maximum right endpoint minus the minimum left endpoint.

The task asks for the minimum total cost using at most i towers for every i from 1 to n.

The number of houses can reach 200000, so any approach that tries every subset of houses or builds a dynamic programming table over all houses and all possible tower counts would be too slow. With a limit of around a few seconds, we need an O(n log n) or close solution. The coordinates can be as large as 10^9, so the algorithm cannot depend on the grid size.

The non obvious cases come from overlapping intervals. A naive solution might think every additional tower always helps, but splitting overlapping intervals does not reduce the cost. For example:

A careless implementation that treats the single house as needing a tower with cost equal to r + c would output 15, confusing the tower's diagonal position with its cost.

Approaches

A direct approach is to try every possible grouping of houses into towers. For each group, we find the minimum and maximum transformed values and compute the cost of the tower. This is correct because one tower is completely determined by the smallest column and largest diagonal value among the houses it covers. However, the number of possible partitions is exponential, so it is unusable.

A more practical brute force idea is to sort the intervals and use dynamic programming where dp[k] stores the best cost using k groups among the first few intervals. This still requires considering many previous split points. With n = 200000, even an optimized O(n^2) version would require around forty billion operations.

The important observation is that after converting houses into intervals, the problem becomes covering intervals with segments. If we start with one segment per interval, the total cost is the sum of all individual interval lengths. Whenever we merge two neighboring groups, the only extra cost comes from the gap between them. If the intervals overlap, merging costs nothing. If there is a gap of size g, merging increases the cost by exactly g.

Because every merge cost is independent, the best way to have fewer towers is to remove the largest gaps first. Starting with n groups, every time we merge across a gap we decrease the number of towers by one and increase the cost by that gap. Thus, the answers can be built by sorting all useful gaps.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Convert every house (r, c) into an interval [c, r + c]. This works because a tower covers a house exactly when the tower's interval contains the house's interval endpoints.
  2. Sort all intervals by their left endpoint. After sorting, all intervals that can overlap will appear next to each other, so we only need to inspect adjacent intervals.
  3. Merge intervals while scanning from left to right. Maintain the current merged interval. If the next interval starts before the current one ends, the two intervals belong to the same connected component and no extra tower is needed. Otherwise, there is a gap between them, and splitting there can save exactly that gap.
  4. Compute the total cost if every connected component is covered separately. This is the best possible cost with the maximum number of towers.
  5. Store every gap between consecutive components. Each gap represents the extra cost paid when two components are forced into one tower.
  6. Sort the gaps in descending order. To reduce the number of towers from n down to 1, repeatedly merge across the largest remaining gap. The running cost after each merge gives the answer for the corresponding number of towers.

Why it works: the intervals inside a connected component overlap through chains, so one segment covering the component is unavoidable. The only choices are whether to join different components. Joining two components adds exactly the distance between them, and different gaps do not affect each other. Choosing the largest gaps to remove first minimizes every possible number of merges.

The code first creates the transformed intervals. The right endpoint uses r + c, while the left endpoint is simply c.

After sorting, the scan finds the connected components. The variable base stores the cost of covering each component independently. The gap list contains the exact amount we lose when we combine two neighboring components.

The final loop processes the gaps from largest to smallest. Each processed gap corresponds to using one fewer tower. Since the output asks for "at most" i towers, the answers are filled so that unused larger tower counts keep the best available value.

The boundary handling is important. The last component must be added after the loop, otherwise the final interval disappears. All arithmetic uses Python integers, so the large coordinates do not cause overflow.
