The direct approach is to assign every chest a final set of required keys. With six chests this is hundreds of millions of combinations, and every combination would require checking many subsets of keys.
The key observation is that the values of chests are very small. Think about what prevents Bob from opening chests. A chest with value x only needs x different locks assigned to it in an optimal solution. If a chest has more than x locks, one of them is unnecessary for the min-cut argument behind the solution. This means each chest only has to track how many locks it has received, not the exact history.
We process keys one by one. For the current key, we decide how many chests receive this lock. The state stores how many locks each chest has collected so far. After all keys are processed, every chest must have collected exactly its value in locks. Algorithm Walkthrough
- Create a DP state representing how many locks each chest has after processing some prefix of keys. Initially every chest has zero locks and no keys have been processed. The state is sufficient because future decisions only depend on how many more locks each chest still needs.
- Process the keys in order. For the current key, try every possible way to distribute this key's lock among the chests. A key can either be placed on a chest or not placed there, and the same key can be used as a lock on several chests.

Why it works:
