The constraints allow up to two hundred thousand elements and two hundred thousand operations, which immediately rules out any approach that scans the entire array per query. Even a linear scan per operation would lead to roughly 4e10 operations in the worst case, which is far beyond time limits. The main observation is that we can tolerate linear scans only if they are restricted to small groups. This suggests dividing the array into blocks of size roughly square root of n. Each block maintains its elements in two forms at once: an ordered list by index for index-based operations, and a sorted structure by value for value-based queries. This dual representation allows us to process range assignments block by block, and value-range updates by scanning only blocks and filtering inside them.
For index range updates, full blocks inside the range can be overwritten in bulk, while boundary blocks are updated element by element. For value range updates, we scan each block’s value-sorted structure to locate affected elements and rewrite them, again only touching elements that truly match the condition.
The query asking how many elements exceed a threshold can be answered by summing contributions from each block. Full blocks contribute via binary search over their sorted value list, and partial blocks contribute via direct inspection.

- For a type one update, which replaces all values in [x, y] with z, we scan each block independently. Inside a block, we use its value-sorted structure to locate all entries whose values fall in the interval. We collect their indices first, because modifying the structure while iterating would invalidate the ordering. After collecting, we update the array and rebuild the block structures accordingly. This guarantees correctness even when multiple matches exist in the same block.
- For a type three query, we directly return the stored value at position p. This is constant time since the block decomposition preserves direct array access.
- For a type four query, we compute the value at position p first. Then we count how many elements are strictly greater than this value by summing contributions from each block. For a full block, we binary search its sorted list. For a partial block, we scan directly.
Why it works
The key invariant is that every block always represents exactly the current contents of its segment in both representations, even if one representation is temporarily rebuilt after an update. Every operation either updates individual elements or fully rebuilds affected block structures, so no stale ordering persists across queries.
