Problem Understanding
We are working on a tree where every vertex is assigned a color, called a mafia. These colors change over time. The key difficulty is that a color does not just “occupy” its vertices. Instead, it also occupies additional vertices that lie on paths connecting its own vertices.
More precisely, fix a color. Look at all vertices currently having that color. For every pair of such vertices, consider the unique simple path between them in the tree. The union of all these paths forms a connected structure. A vertex belongs to the control area of that color if it lies on at least one of these paths. So each color induces a subtree-like region that is exactly the minimal connected subtree spanning all vertices of that color.
Each query asks about a path between two vertices v and u. We need to count how many distinct colors have at least one vertex from their control area lying somewhere on this path. In other words, we take the set of all vertices on the v to u path, look at all control areas that intersect this path, and count how many distinct colors appear in this union.
The constraints allow up to 200000 vertices and 200000 operations, with both recoloring updates and path queries. Any solution that inspects all colors or recomputes structures per query will be far too slow. Even iterating over the path explicitly is too expensive in worst case since a path can be linear in n and repeated q times leads to quadratic behavior.
A subtle edge case is when a color appears only once. In that case, its control area is just that single vertex. If a second occurrence is added later, suddenly the control area expands to include all vertices on the connecting paths, potentially affecting many nodes at once. Another corner case is recoloring a vertex, which can split or merge control areas for two different colors, and this change is global across the tree structure.
Approaches
The brute force approach is straightforward. For each query, we compute all vertices on the path between v and u, then for each color, check whether any vertex of that color’s control area intersects the path. However, maintaining control areas explicitly requires recomputing the Steiner tree for each color after every update. Constructing a Steiner tree over k vertices costs at least O(k log k) or O(k) with LCA preprocessing, and in the worst case k is O(n). Doing this per update is already too slow, and combining it with q queries makes the total complexity blow up to O(nq).
The key structural observation is that each color’s control area is a dynamic Steiner tree. Instead of maintaining it explicitly, we only need to know whether it intersects a given path. This shifts the problem from building full subtrees to maintaining a property: whether the color has influence crossing a particular path segment.
A powerful way to handle dynamic subtree-like objects on trees is centroid decomposition. The idea is to decompose the tree into a hierarchy where each node belongs to O(log n) centroid components. For each centroid, we can maintain summary information about how each color is distributed across its child subtrees. This allows us to detect whether a color “spreads” across multiple branches of a centroid, which is exactly what makes it appear in Steiner paths.
When a color appears in at least two different child branches of some centroid, that centroid lies inside the Steiner tree of that color. This provides a way to represent control areas implicitly, without explicitly constructing them.
We then combine this centroid-based representation with path decomposition. Each query path can be broken into O(log n) centroid-related segments, and we aggregate which colors are active along that path using precomputed structures.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root the tree arbitrarily and build a centroid decomposition of the tree.
We maintain, for every centroid node, a record of how colors are distributed across its immediate centroid-partitioned subtrees. Conceptually, for each centroid c, we split its component into child parts. For each color x, we maintain how many vertices of color x appear in each part.
When a color has occurrences in at least two different parts of centroid c, then c is a “relevant witness” for that color’s control area. This is the key abstraction that replaces explicit Steiner trees.
We also maintain, for each color, the set of vertices currently having that color, so updates can be processed incrementally.
The processing works as follows.
Algorithm Walkthrough
- Build centroid decomposition of the tree, storing for each node its centroid ancestors and the corresponding subtree identifier at each level. This allows any vertex to update O(log n) centroid structures efficiently.

- For each centroid segment that intersects the path, collect all colors that are active at that centroid. The union of these sets over the decomposed path gives all colors whose control areas intersect the path.
The correctness hinges on the fact that a color intersects a path if and only if its Steiner tree contains at least one vertex on that path. Any Steiner tree is fully captured by the set of centroids where the color spans multiple branches, so any intersection with a path must pass through at least one such centroid along the path decomposition.
Why it works
A color’s control area is exactly its Steiner tree in the tree metric. A vertex lies in this Steiner tree precisely when it is required to connect occurrences of the color, which happens when the color appears in at least two different directions in some subtree partition. Centroid decomposition ensures that every vertex is the “split witness” for such situations at some level. Since every path can be decomposed through centroid ancestors, any intersection between a path and a Steiner tree must be detected at one of these centroid witnesses. This guarantees that counting active colors across the relevant centroid segments exactly matches the number of distinct control areas crossed by the path.

Edge Cases
A single vertex color is stable because its control area never expands beyond that vertex. Even after multiple recolor operations, centroid updates only affect that vertex’s contribution, and no false intersections are introduced on unrelated paths.
When all vertices share the same color, every centroid quickly becomes fully active for that color. Any path query should always return 1, since there is only one control area. The centroid structure correctly maintains this because the color never spans more than one “state”, and all nodes remain consistent contributors.
When recoloring oscillates a single vertex repeatedly, each update only touches O(log n) centroid ancestors. The data structure does not rebuild global Steiner information, so repeated toggling does not degrade correctness or performance.
