Another failure case is assuming any path inside subtree(v) is valid. For example, in a chain-like subtree, the longest path might lie entirely below v and completely skip using v as LCA, which should not be counted for v.

Approaches

A brute-force interpretation would try every node v, then enumerate all pairs of nodes (u, w) in its subtree, compute their path sums, and keep the best pair whose LCA is v. Even if subtree sizes are balanced, this leads to roughly summing over all pairs across all subtrees, which degenerates toward O(n^2) behavior in the worst case. With n up to 10^7, this is completely infeasible.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We process nodes in reverse order so that children are always computed before their parent, which matches the natural dependency of the DP.

Why it works

For any node i, every valid path with LCA i splits uniquely at i into at most two downward segments, one per child subtree. The dp value captures the best possible downward segment starting from any node. Because optimal substructure holds on trees with positive weights, any optimal path segment inside a subtree can be replaced by dp without losing correctness. This ensures that when combining children at i, we are implicitly considering all possible endpoints in both subtrees without enumerating them.
