A naive approach would simulate f repeatedly for every element in each query until all values match. Each application reduces magnitude, but a number like 10^18 can still require multiple steps, and doing this across 10^5 elements per query would explode.
A subtle edge case appears when numbers are already small or equal after one or two transformations. For example, if all numbers in a range are identical initially, the answer is zero. If they converge to equality at different speeds, we are effectively asked for the maximum distance-to-meeting-point among them.
Another important edge case is zero. Since digits are all zero, f(0) = 0, so it is already stable. Any logic assuming strictly positive digit behavior would fail here.
The constraints imply that each query must be answered in logarithmic or near-logarithmic time, and each update must also be efficient, ruling out per-query simulation entirely.
Approaches
The brute-force idea is straightforward. For each number, we repeatedly apply the function f until it reaches a stable value, recording how many steps it takes to stabilize or reach a fixed point. Then for a query [l, r], we look at all elements in the range, compute their stabilization sequences, and determine how long it takes for all of them to become equal under repeated application. This essentially means tracking the first time at which all sequences intersect at a common value.
This works in principle because f eventually reduces any number into a small cycle or fixed point, so every element has a finite trajectory. However, the cost is dominated by recomputing these trajectories repeatedly. Even if each number takes about O(log x) applications, recomputing this per query over up to 10^5 elements leads to about 10^10 operations in the worst case.
The key observation is that the function is not arbitrary, it strongly compresses values. After a small number of applications, every number collapses into a tiny set of values. This means we do not actually need full trajectories; we only need to know how many steps are required for each number to reach a canonical representative, and how these steps behave under merging ranges.
Once we recognize that each value can be mapped to a small “stability depth” and that this depth behaves like a monotone attribute under f, the problem becomes a range query over integers with point updates. This can be handled using a segment tree that maintains, for each segment, the maximum of these depths. The answer for a range is then derived from how these depths align, since the slowest-converging element determines when all values can become equal.
The real computational win comes from precomputing f-chains only once per update value, and treating everything else as segment aggregation.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first precompute, for any value we ever store, how it evolves under repeated applications of f until it stabilizes. Since values shrink quickly, this chain is short, and we can cache results per distinct value.
We then define for each number a depth, which is the number of applications needed for it to reach its stable endpoint. This depth is the key invariant we will maintain in a segment tree.
We build a segment tree over the array where each node stores information derived from these depths.
Algorithm Walkthrough
- For each value x, compute the sequence x, f(x), f(f(x)), stopping when the sequence becomes stationary. Record the number of steps needed to reach this fixed point. This gives a “depth” for x.
- Build a segment tree where each leaf stores the depth of the corresponding array element. Internal nodes store aggregate information over their segment, primarily the maximum depth.
- For a type 1 query, update position x by recomputing the depth of the new value v and updating the segment tree at that position.
- For a type 2 query over [l, r], retrieve the maximum depth in that range from the segment tree. This maximum represents the slowest element to stabilize under repeated f applications.
- Output this maximum as the number of applications needed for all elements in the range to become equal under repeated application of f.
The reason we only need the maximum is that once every element has reached the same stabilized value, further applications of f keep all values identical, and the last element to “catch up” determines the time.
Why it works
Each element follows a deterministic decreasing trajectory under repeated applications of f until it reaches a fixed point. The process of all elements becoming equal under repeated global application of f is governed by the slowest convergence among them. Since f never increases values and eventually collapses all numbers into a small fixed set, the time to synchronization is exactly the maximum individual convergence depth in the range. This gives a stable invariant: the segment tree always stores correct maximum convergence depth, and updates preserve correctness because each point is recomputed independently.
