- For a fixed directed state (u, v), determine whether it is winning by checking whether there exists a neighbor w of v such that w is not u and the state (v, w) is losing. This reflects the rule that the current player wants at least one move that forces the opponent into a losing position.
- During DFS, after processing all children of v, we compute dp[v][u] by scanning neighbors of v and checking if any move leads to a losing state.
- After all dp values are computed for directed edges, evaluate the starting position. From node 1, the first player can move to any neighbor v, so the root is winning if there exists at least one neighbor v such that dp[v][1] is losing.
Why it works is that the game has no cycles in state space because every move strictly moves along unused nodes in a tree, so recursion bottoms out at leaves. Each directed edge depends only on strictly deeper states, so the DP is well-founded and cannot reference itself indirectly.
