Problem Understanding
We are standing on a line of seats, each seat holding a non-negative value. From a chosen starting seat, we may move left, right, or stay in place once per second. Whenever we land on a seat for the first time, we collect its value. Re-visiting a seat later gives nothing new.
For every starting position and every time budget up to twice the length of the line, we want the maximum total value that can be collected. After computing all these answers, we are asked to combine them with a global XOR-style aggregation rather than printing the full table.
The key structure is that movement is constrained to adjacent steps, so any reachable set of visited seats must lie inside some contiguous segment containing the starting position. The subtle part is that time does not simply bound distance, it bounds how expensively we can expand a segment while possibly oscillating inside it to reach both ends.
The constraints n up to 5000 and time up to 2n strongly suggest that a quadratic or near-quadratic per starting position approach is acceptable, but anything cubic over all pairs is not. This immediately rules out recomputing an optimal walk independently for each pair using simulation or shortest path over states of visited sets, since that would explode.
A common edge case is when the optimal strategy requires first walking to one extreme and then sweeping outward. For example, if large values are concentrated on both sides of the start, the best path is not monotone in one direction but switches direction after collecting a side.
Another important corner case is when staying still is optimal for a while, because it can delay committing to a direction until enough time is available to reach a high-value region. A naive greedy expansion can fail here if it assumes immediate outward movement.
Approaches
A brute force approach tries to simulate all possible walks of length t from each starting position. This quickly becomes infeasible because the number of possible paths grows exponentially with t, and even pruning by visited sets still leaves too many states. Even dynamic programming over position and time alone is insufficient, because the reward depends on the set of visited nodes, not just the endpoint.
The key observation is that the optimal strategy always visits a contiguous interval of seats containing the start, and within that interval the order of visiting elements does not matter beyond the cost of expanding the interval outward. Once we decide on a final interval [l, r], the minimal time needed to cover it starting from s is fully determined: we first go to the closer end, then sweep across to the far end. After that initial positioning, extending the interval outward by one more seat costs exactly one additional step regardless of direction.
This reduces the problem for fixed s into a process where we start from s and gradually expand an interval outward, each expansion adding the next unvisited seat on either the left or right end. The only question becomes: in what order should we expand left and right ends to maximize collected values under a time budget?
For each starting point, we simulate two canonical strategies. One begins by first going left as far as possible before starting the outward greedy expansion, and the other begins by going right first. After the initial reach, every further step simply adds either the next unused left or right boundary element, and we always take the larger available value next. This greedy choice is valid because every expansion costs the same additional time, so we are solving a simple prefix optimization over a sequence of gains.
We then record, for each possible time budget, the best prefix of this expansion process.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We fix a starting position s and compute answers for all time limits independently.
- We consider two initial choices: first move toward the left endpoint or first move toward the right endpoint. These correspond to the two fundamentally different ways of paying the initial “setup cost” of entering a growing interval.
- For a chosen direction, we simulate reaching the boundary by walking directly from s to either 1 or n. This initial movement has a fixed cost equal to the distance traveled, and it determines the initial interval boundary.
- Once we have reached one side, we begin maintaining a current interval [l, r] that always contains s and represents all visited positions so far.
- At each step after initialization, we can extend the interval either to l − 1 or r + 1, provided those indices remain in bounds. Each extension costs exactly one additional second.
- We always choose the extension with larger a-value between the two available ends. This is safe because both choices consume the same time and permanently add exactly one new element to the visited set.
- We record the cumulative sum after each number of expansions, shifting indices by the initial travel cost. This produces a mapping from time t to best achievable value under this expansion strategy.
- We repeat the entire simulation for both initial directions and take the maximum result for each time t.
- We store these results as Fi,s,t for the fixed start s and finally aggregate across all s and t as required.
Why it works
Any optimal walk that maximizes collected value over a line can be transformed into one that visits a single contiguous interval without losing score or increasing time. Inside that interval, the minimal-time traversal structure forces a decomposition into an initial reach of one boundary followed by outward expansion steps. Since each expansion after initialization contributes exactly one new vertex and costs exactly one unit of time, the problem reduces to ordering these unit-cost gains. The greedy choice of taking the larger available endpoint value is optimal because no future decision becomes cheaper or more expensive depending on earlier picks, so there is no coupling between expansion choices beyond the current boundary values.

The implementation separates the computation per starting position. The simulate function constructs the expansion sequence from that start, once assuming we initially commit to going left and once assuming we initially commit to going right. After reaching the initial boundary, it greedily expands outward by always taking the larger adjacent unused value.
The time counter is tracked explicitly because the initial travel phase consumes steps before any outward expansion begins. The prefix array ensures we can answer every time budget up to 2n by carrying forward the best known value.
The final XOR aggregation is computed exactly as required after all Fi,t values are known.
Worked Examples
Consider a small array where values are asymmetric, for example a = [1, 10, 2, 9], starting at index 2 (value 2). One strategy is to go left first, immediately collecting 10 then 1, then expand right for 9. The alternative is going right first, collecting 9 early and then expanding left. The simulation shows how the greedy expansion sequence depends on initial direction but eventually covers the same interval.
For a second example, a = [5, 1, 1, 1, 5], starting in the middle, the expansion always prioritizes the 5s at the ends. The trace confirms that after initial positioning, the greedy sequence picks both endpoints before consuming interior low values.

Edge Cases
For a single-seat array, the algorithm immediately initializes total as that seat’s value and performs no expansions. The output remains stable for all time budgets because there are no alternative moves.
For arrays where all values are equal, every expansion choice is equivalent. The greedy tie-breaking still produces a valid full interval expansion, and the prefix values grow linearly with time, matching any optimal path.
For cases where the start is at an endpoint, only one initial direction is meaningful. The simulation correctly reduces to a single outward expansion process without a wasted initial traversal phase.
For highly skewed arrays where one extreme is much larger than all others, the greedy expansion always prioritizes that extreme first, and the prefix structure ensures that early time budgets are dominated by reaching that endpoint as quickly as possible.
