Each meteor starts at a known point in the plane and moves in a fixed direction with constant velocity. After time $t \ge 0$, meteor $i$ is at

At any chosen time $t$, we must draw the smallest axis-aligned rectangle that contains all meteors. Its area is determined by the width and height:
$$\text{area}(t) = (\max x_i(t) - \min x_i(t)) \cdot (\max y_i(t) - \min y_i(t)).$$
The task is to choose a single non-negative time $t$ that minimizes this area.
The input size goes up to $N = 10^6$, so any method that considers pairs of meteors or simulates time continuously is impossible. Even $O(N \log N)$ is already tight but acceptable, while $O(N^2)$ or anything event-per-pair is completely ruled out.
A subtle point is that the function we minimize is not smooth. The identity of the leftmost, rightmost, topmost, and bottommost meteors changes over time. Any solution that assumes a fixed ordering of points in time will fail.
One failure case appears when two meteors swap order in x or y.

Approaches
A direct idea is to try candidate times and evaluate the bounding box. The difficulty is that the function changes whenever the extreme points in x or y change identity. Since each coordinate is linear in time, every pair of meteors defines a time when they swap order in x or y:
$$x_i + v_{x,i} t = x_j + v_{x,j} t.$$
There are $O(N^2)$ such events, which is far too many.
The key observation is that we do not actually need all pairwise swaps. The only times that matter are when the identity of the maximum or minimum in x or y changes. That is an “upper envelope” and “lower envelope” problem over linear functions.
For x-coordinates, each meteor defines a line $x_i(t) = v_{x,i} t + x_i$. The maximum x is the upper envelope of these lines, and the minimum x is the lower envelope. Both envelopes can be built in $O(N \log N)$ using a convex hull trick over lines. The important consequence is that the envelope changes only at $O(N)$ critical times.
The same construction applies independently for y-coordinates. This produces a set of candidate times where either width or height changes slope.
Once we collect all such breakpoints (plus $t = 0$), we evaluate the area at each candidate time. Between consecutive breakpoints, both width and height are linear functions, so the area is a product of two linear functions on that interval. The global minimum must occur at one of these breakpoints or at an interval boundary.

Algorithm Walkthrough
1. Represent motion as lines
For each meteor, treat x and y independently as linear functions of time. Each meteor contributes two lines:
$$x_i(t) = v_{x,i} t + x_i,\quad y_i(t) = v_{y,i} t + y_i.$$
This reformulation turns the geometric problem into studying extrema of linear functions.
2. Build upper and lower envelopes for x
Construct the maximum envelope of all $x_i(t)$ lines and the minimum envelope. The same is done for y.
This is done using a convex hull trick over lines, sorting by slope and maintaining a stack of candidate lines. Each time a new line is added, we remove lines that will never be optimal.
The important consequence is that each envelope consists of a sequence of linear segments.
3. Extract breakpoints
Every time the envelope switches from one line to another, we compute the intersection time of the two lines responsible for the switch. These intersection times are candidate points where the identity of the extreme point changes.
We collect:
- all x-envelope change times
- all y-envelope change times
- $t = 0$
4. Sort and deduplicate candidate times
We merge all candidate times into one sorted list and remove duplicates. These are the only times where the width or height formula can change structure.

Why it works
Between any two consecutive candidate times, the same meteor defines the maximum and minimum in both x and y.
