Algorithm Walkthrough
We build the solution by focusing on how much new structure each selected leaf adds.
- Root the tree at 1 and compute, for every node, its parent and depth. This gives us a consistent notion of how leaf paths extend upward.
- Collect all leaves in a list and sort them by depth in descending order. Deeper leaves tend to introduce longer root-to-leaf paths and therefore have higher potential to expand the induced subtree before overlaps dominate.
- Maintain a boolean array or marker that tracks whether a node has already been “activated” by previously selected leaves. Initially, no nodes are activated.
- Process leaves in order of decreasing depth, and conceptually add them one by one. When adding a leaf, walk from that leaf up to the root until reaching an already activated node, marking all newly visited nodes as activated. The number of newly activated nodes is the contribution of that leaf at this stage.
- Store these contributions in an array gain[], where gain[i] represents how many new nodes are introduced when selecting the i-th deepest leaf.
- Sort gain in descending order. For k = 1 to L, the optimal answer is the sum of the largest k values in gain.
The reason this works is that the union of root-to-leaf paths determines exactly the set of nodes that appear in the LCA closure. Each leaf contributes a path, but overlaps reduce marginal gain, so selecting leaves in order of largest marginal contribution is optimal.
Why it works
The key invariant is that after selecting some set of leaves, the activated node set is exactly the union of all root-to-leaf paths of selected leaves. Any node in this union appears either as a selected leaf or as an LCA of two selected leaves whose paths diverge at or above that node. Edge Cases
