A subtle point is that the constraint is global across all internal nodes in both trees simultaneously. A coloring that is valid in one tree may break the balance condition in the other, so we are really solving a constraint satisfaction problem where each leaf contributes simultaneously to two different hierarchical structures.
Edge cases that break naive reasoning usually come from asymmetric trees.
For example, if one tree is a chain and the other is a star, greedy local balancing in one structure can easily violate the other.

Approaches
A brute force interpretation assigns a color to each of the k leaves, giving 2^k possibilities. For each assignment, we would compute subtree counts for every node in both trees. Each evaluation costs O(n + m) using a postorder traversal. This leads to O(2^k (n + m)), which is completely infeasible even for k as small as 25.
The key observation is that the constraint is linear and hierarchical. Each internal node imposes a condition on the sum of leaf contributions in its subtree: the difference between red and blue must lie in {−1, 0, 1}. This means every subtree enforces a parity-like restriction rather than an exact count constraint.
Instead of thinking in terms of individual leaves, we shift perspective to contributions. Each leaf contributes +1 if red and −1 if blue. Then every subtree sum must lie in [−1, 1].
Now the structure becomes clearer: each tree independently defines a set of linear constraints over leaf variables. Each internal node u gives a constraint on the sum of variables in its subtree in that tree.
Each tree alone would allow many valid assignments. The difficulty is that we need a single assignment satisfying both constraint systems simultaneously.
The crucial simplification is that these constraints form a laminar family in each tree. For any node, its subtree is either disjoint from or nested within another subtree. This allows us to propagate feasibility bottom-up by tracking, for each node, the allowable range of imbalance it can tolerate from its children.
At each node, instead of tracking exact sums, we track the possible interval of subtree imbalance achievable from leaves in that subtree. Leaves contribute either +1 or −1, so they start with interval [−1, 1]. Internal nodes combine child intervals by summing them, then clipping to enforce the constraint [−1, 1].
Thus each tree can be reduced to computing feasible “flow ranges” from root to leaves.
The final insight is that both trees impose the same type of interval constraints over the same variables (the leaves). We compute, for each tree, the constraints it imposes in terms of allowable partial sums over any prefix in a DFS order. Then we intersect these constraints globally. This reduces to checking consistency of two interval systems over a single sequence, which can be satisfied greedily by assigning each leaf in order while maintaining feasibility intervals from both trees.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We reduce each tree into a constraint system over the leaves.
1. Root both trees and compute leaf orderings
We root both trees at their given roots and perform a DFS to compute, for every node, the list of leaves in its subtree. This gives each internal node a contiguous segment over a DFS ordering of leaves.
This contiguity is essential because subtree constraints become interval constraints on that ordering.
2. Build subtree intervals
For each node u in each tree, we record the interval [L(u), R(u)] of leaves in its subtree according to the DFS order.
Now every constraint depends only on contiguous segments of leaves.
3. Translate subtree condition into prefix constraints
Instead of tracking all intervals, we observe that if every subtree sum is in [−1, 1], then in particular every prefix difference must remain bounded. This allows us to convert interval constraints into bounds on prefix sums of leaf contributions.
Each leaf i contributes xi in {−1, +1}. We define prefix sum S[i] = x1 + ... + xi.
Each tree induces upper and lower bounds on S[i] for all i.
We compute these bounds by propagating constraints from subtree intervals: if a subtree covers a contiguous segment, its total sum constraint translates into a bound on differences of prefix sums.
4. Intersect constraints from both trees
We now have two independent sets of bounds on the same prefix sum array S. We intersect them pointwise, producing final allowable ranges [low[i], high[i]] for each prefix.
If at any point low[i] > high[i], no solution exists.
5. Construct assignment greedily
We assign leaves from 1 to k. At step i, we choose xi = +1 if it keeps S[i] within [low[i], high[i]]; otherwise we choose −1.
This greedy choice works because constraints are monotone over prefixes.
Why it works
Each tree independently enforces convex constraints over prefix sums of leaf contributions. Intersection of convex feasible regions remains convex. The greedy construction maintains feasibility at every prefix, so it never invalidates future options as long as the interval is not violated. Thus, if a solution exists, the greedy path will find one.
