Each input path is an absolute sequence of directory names starting from root. The number of paths is large, up to 100,000, and the total number of characters is up to one million, which forces any solution to be essentially linear in input size.
A naive mistake is to assume that rooting the working directory at the global root or at the deepest common prefix of all paths is optimal. This fails because the best directory depends on a tradeoff: moving the root deeper reduces upward moves for some paths while increasing them for others.

To evaluate a candidate directory, we compute the longest common prefix between it and every path, then sum up the number of remaining components plus required .. moves. Since there are O(total nodes) candidate directories and each evaluation can touch all paths, this becomes quadratic in the worst case, far beyond any feasible limit.
The key observation is that the cost function can be rewritten in a way that depends only on subtree structure of a trie of all paths. Instead of recomputing from scratch for every candidate root, we can aggregate contributions and “re-root” the answer efficiently across the tree.
The essential structure is that when we move the working directory across one edge in the directory tree, only paths passing through that edge change their relative representation in a predictable incremental way. This allows us to compute the answer for one root first, then propagate it to neighbors using a rerooting dynamic programming technique on the trie.
We first build a trie of all paths. Then we compute the cost when the root is the actual filesystem root by summing contributions from all paths. After that, we compute subtree statistics: how many path endings lie in each subtree and how deep they are. With these, we can move the root from a node to its child in O(1) amortized time per edge.

Algorithm Walkthrough

1. Build a trie of all paths
We insert each path segment by segment. Every node represents a directory, and we mark nodes where paths end. This gives a tree structure over all prefixes.

We compute this once during DFS accumulation.
4. Reroot DP transition
We now consider moving the working directory from a node u to one of its children v.
Only paths in the subtree of v become closer to the root, because they lose one leading directory in their representation. All other paths become one step farther away in terms of required .. components.
We update the cost using:
the number of paths in subtree(v), and the total number of paths outside it.
This allows computing each child’s answer in O(1) from its parent.
5. Take global minimum
We evaluate all nodes during rerooting and keep the smallest cost.
Why it works
The key invariant is that for any node, the cost can be decomposed into contributions from paths inside its subtree and paths outside it. Moving the root across an edge only changes whether those paths require one additional .. or one fewer leading directory segment. Since every path is affected by at most one edge per reroot step, the transition is linear and exact, so no recomputation over full paths is needed.
