Problem Understanding

Each panda starts with color zero, then walks along its path and whenever it visits a feeding station it immediately changes its color to that station’s color. Since the path is linear on a tree, the panda may pass multiple feeding stations, and its final color is simply the color of the last feeding station encountered while moving from the start node to the end node. If the path contains no feeding stations at all, the panda stays color zero.

The task is to process each exhibit node and determine how many distinct final panda colors appear among all pandas whose paths pass through that exhibit node. A panda is considered to “pass through” a node if the node lies on its path between endpoints, including endpoints themselves.

The input size pushes us toward near linear or near linearithmic solutions. With n and m up to 3⋅10^5, anything closer to quadratic over paths is impossible. Even processing each query by explicitly walking paths is too slow because a single path can take O(n) time in a chain-shaped tree, leading to O(nm) behavior.

A subtle issue comes from two layers of aggregation. First, each path must be converted into a single final color based on a maximum-on-path query restricted to feeding stations. Second, we must union many tree paths per color and then compute how many such unions cover each exhibit. A naive solution that recomputes path coverage independently per panda or recomputes color contribution per node will repeatedly traverse the tree and exceed limits.

A failure case for naive reasoning appears when many pandas share the same color but their paths overlap partially. For example, two pandas with the same final color might both pass through an exhibit node, but counting them separately would overcount. We only want distinct colors per node, so duplicates must collapse per color group before aggregation.

Another failure mode appears when a path contains no feeding stations. In that case the color remains zero, and this color must still be treated like any other color in the final counting.

Approaches

A direct approach is to process each panda independently. For each panda, we determine its final color by walking its path and tracking the last feeding station encountered. Then we mark all nodes on its path and finally update every exhibit on that path with this color. This immediately fails because even enumerating nodes on each path is too slow in a large tree.

The first improvement is to avoid walking the path explicitly. On a tree, whether a node lies on a path can be checked using LCA, and path decomposition can be handled efficiently. We can also compute the final color of each panda using a path maximum query over node depths restricted to feeding stations. This reduces color computation to a standard tree query problem.

The second improvement is to aggregate by color instead of by panda. Once every panda has a final color, we group all pandas by that color. For each color, we consider the union of all paths belonging to pandas of that color. Now the problem becomes: for each color, mark all nodes covered by at least one of its paths, and later for each exhibit count how many colors cover it.

A key observation makes this manageable. Instead of explicitly marking every node on every path, we use a tree difference trick. For a single path (a, b), we can add +1 at a and b, subtract 1 at their LCA and its parent. A DFS accumulation then tells us which nodes are covered by at least one path. We can apply this per color group independently.

The remaining challenge is efficiency across many colors. We cannot maintain a full global difference array for each color. Instead, we reuse a single array and carefully reset only nodes touched by each color group. Since the total number of updates over all groups is O(m), the amortized cost stays linear.

Finally, we accumulate answers per node: if a node has coverage greater than zero for a given color group, that color contributes one to the node’s answer.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We build the solution in two phases: computing final colors of pandas, and aggregating path coverage by color.

  1. Root the tree arbitrarily and preprocess LCA structure so we can answer ancestor and LCA queries in logarithmic time.
  2. Compute the final color of each panda. For each query path (a, b), we find the node on the path that is a feeding station with maximum depth. This is done using a heavy-light decomposition structure where each node stores whether it is a feeding station and its depth. A segment tree over the HLD order allows us to query the deepest feeding station on any path segment. That gives the last feeding station encountered from a to b, hence the final color.
  3. Group pandas by their computed final color. Each group now represents all paths contributing a single color.
  4. For each color group, apply a tree difference technique over all its paths. For every path (a, b), compute lca = LCA(a, b), then apply:

increment at a and b,

decrement at lca and parent(lca).

This ensures that after propagation, each node knows how many paths of this color pass through it. 5. Run a DFS to accumulate these differences into actual coverage counts per node. Whenever a node has positive coverage, it means at least one panda of this color visited it. 6. For every exhibit node, if it is covered by the current color group, increment its answer by one. Reset only the nodes touched by this color group before moving to the next color.

Why it works

Each color group is processed independently, so overlap between different colors never interferes. Within a color group, the difference marking guarantees that every node’s final value equals the number of paths of that color passing through it. Since we only care about whether this value is nonzero, multiple overlapping paths of the same color collapse correctly into a single contribution. The LCA-based difference scheme ensures correctness for tree path coverage without explicitly iterating over nodes on paths.

Edge Cases

One corner case is when a panda never encounters a feeding station. In that situation the computed color becomes zero. These pandas are still valid contributors, and they must be grouped under color zero and processed like any other group. The algorithm handles this naturally because the grouping step does not exclude zero, and the difference-array logic remains valid for those paths.

Another case occurs when many pandas share identical paths but belong to different groups. Even though each group processes the same set of nodes, the clearing step ensures no residual updates leak between groups. Without careful reset of only touched nodes, later groups would inherit incorrect coverage counts.

A final subtle case is when paths intersect only partially around an exhibit node. The difference-array approach ensures that partial overlaps still correctly mark the node if at least one path covers it, since coverage is computed via accumulation rather than explicit enumeration.
