The key observation is that adjacency structure is static. The only edges that ever matter are the fixed edges (i, i+1). Whether two groups are adjacent depends only on whether any of these fixed edges cross between them. This reduces the problem to maintaining a dynamic partition of a path graph while supporting merges and maintaining which components are connected by boundary edges.
This suggests a union-find-like structure, but standard DSU is insufficient because we also need to detect whether two components are adjacent via at least one edge in the original line. We therefore maintain, for each component, not only its size and sum of resources, but also which other components it touches via boundary edges. Since components evolve, these adjacency relations must be updated when merges occur.
The standard way to manage this efficiently is small-to-large merging of component membership lists. Each component stores the list of its nodes. When merging two components, we iterate through the smaller one and update all affected boundary relations by looking at neighbors i−1 and i+1. This ensures each index is processed only logarithmically many times across all merges.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We maintain a disjoint-set structure over components. Each component keeps a list of its member indices, the sum of resources, and a set of neighboring components induced by adjacency along the line.
- Initialize each position i as its own component, with sum equal to a[i], and no neighbors initially. We also record that position-to-component mapping is identity.
- For each interaction query involving positions x and y, find their current components A and B using DSU find operations.
- If A equals B, we do nothing since the operation is invalid when both positions are already in the same component.
- To determine whether the interaction is peaceful or hostile, we check whether A and B are adjacent components. This is true if A appears in the neighbor set of B or vice versa. If they are adjacent, the result is conflict; otherwise it is alliance.
- We compute the new component C by merging A and B. We attach the smaller component into the larger one to guarantee efficiency. We move all nodes of the smaller component into the larger one and update their component pointer.
- While moving nodes, we inspect each node u in the merged-in component. For each u, we check u−1 and u+1 if they exist. If a neighbor v lies in a different component D, then C becomes adjacent to D. We also ensure that D replaces references to A or B with C.

The key invariant is that every component correctly maintains the set of its member indices and the correct sum of resources after all operations. Edge Cases
