This reduces the problem to a dynamic system over a multiset of available monster strengths that becomes gradually accessible as more vertices are unlocked. Each vertex contributes up to two values, and unlocking a vertex depends on being able to reach it, which is governed by already unlocked vertices. Algorithm Walkthrough

We reinterpret the process as maintaining a pool of monsters that become available when their vertex is reachable. Each vertex has at most two monsters. The player starts from a fixed vertex in each query, so reachability is relative and dynamic per query.   3. While there exists a monster in the heap whose strength is at most current health, repeatedly extract the smallest such monster and “defeat” it. This increases health by its value. The reason we always pick the smallest available valid monster is that it strictly maximizes future availability without risking skipping a beneficial small gain that unlocks larger portions of the graph.
  4. After defeating a monster, check whether its vertex is now fully cleared. If so, we expand reachability by adding all monsters from its neighbors that were previously blocked. These newly exposed monsters are pushed into the heap.
  5. Repeat until no more monsters can be defeated with current health. The final health is the answer for that query.

The key invariant is that the heap always contains exactly the set of monsters that belong to vertices reachable from the currently cleared region, and all of them are still defeatable candidates. Every time we clear a vertex, we correctly unlock all adjacent vertices that become reachable, ensuring no missing transitions.

Why it works

At any point, the algorithm maintains that every monster inserted into the heap is associated with a vertex that is reachable through already cleared vertices. Conversely, any monster not in the heap belongs to a vertex that cannot yet be entered without first increasing reachability through currently available clears.

Since every fight strictly increases health and never decreases it, once a monster becomes eligible, delaying its processing cannot improve future options. The greedy choice of always taking the smallest feasible monster ensures we maximize the number of future unlocks because reachability grows only when vertices are fully cleared, and smaller monsters are easier prerequisites for unlocking those vertices. This monotonic expansion guarantees that if a sequence of fights exists that leads to a higher final health, the heap-driven process will eventually simulate a prefix of that sequence in a valid order.
