Each ball has a color, and after the whole construction we look at connected groups of touching balls that all have the same color. The task is to find the largest such group among every possible pile that can be produced.

The limit of 150 balls is small enough that we can afford exponential work over the actual number of meaningful choices, but not over the number of balls. Approaches

A direct simulation of all possible choices would branch every time two equally high positions exist. For a pile of 150 balls this would mean exploring far too many arrangements. The brute force idea is correct because every generated pile can be simulated and checked, but the number of possibilities grows exponentially with the number of choices.

The useful observation comes from looking at the geometry. The highest available positions always fill the pile row by row. The balls form rows whose lengths are 1, 2, 3, and so on from top to bottom. Once a row starts being filled, the only freedom is whether the new row grows to the left or to the right. The number of possible rows is tiny, so the number of independent decisions is tiny as well.

The 150 balls can occupy at most 17 rows because the sum of the first 17 row lengths is 153. We can enumerate every possible orientation of these rows. For each orientation, we build the corresponding contact graph of balls and run a graph traversal to find the largest connected component containing a single color.

The number of layouts is at most about 2^17, which is around 131 thousand. Each layout has only 150 balls, so checking all layouts is practical.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Split the insertion sequence into rows of lengths 1, 2, 3, and so on. The first row contains the last ball added to that row because rows are filled from the bottom upward, so we reverse the construction order when creating the geometric layout.
  2. Enumerate every possible left/right orientation of the rows. A row can be mirrored, and these choices describe every possible pile that the insertion process can create. There are at most 17 rows, so the enumeration is small.
  3. For each orientation, place every ball at an integer coordinate on a triangular grid. Consecutive positions in the same row touch, and positions in neighboring rows touch diagonally when their coordinates differ by the appropriate amount.
  4. Build the adjacency graph of touching balls. Two balls are connected if they share an edge in this graph.
  5. Run a depth first search from every unvisited ball. During the traversal, only continue through balls that have the same color as the starting ball. The size of that traversal is one possible cluster size.
  6. Keep the largest cluster size found over all generated orientations.

Why it works:

The insertion rule does not allow arbitrary stable piles. The highest available slot rule forces the pile to be filled in triangular rows. The only remaining freedom is which side each row extends toward when there are two equal-height choices. Enumerating all row orientations therefore covers every possible pile. For any fixed pile, the graph traversal visits exactly the balls in each monochromatic connected component, so the maximum found for that pile is correct. Taking the maximum over all possible piles gives the required answer.

The first part of the code reconstructs the row structure. The input order is the insertion order, while the geometric rows are easiest to build from the last inserted balls backward. The loop repeatedly removes the last complete row length from the sequence.

The enumeration loop tries every possible orientation of every row. The rows are stored with a possible reversal, representing the choice of extending that row to the opposite side.

Coordinates are assigned so that touching balls differ by one of the six neighboring triangular-grid directions. A dictionary from coordinate to ball index lets us build the graph without searching through all pairs of balls.

The depth first search counts only balls with the same color as the starting ball. The visited array is shared across that traversal because balls of another color cannot belong to the same cluster. The maximum value across all layouts is the final result.
