Problem Understanding

We maintain an array whose elements are always in the range [-2, 2]. Two kinds of operations appear.

An update changes one position to a new value.

A query gives a nonzero target sum X. We must determine whether there exists a contiguous subarray whose sum is exactly X. If such a subarray exists, we must also output one valid pair of endpoints.

The array is dynamic, and both N and Q can be as large as 2 · 10^5 across all test cases. Any solution that scans the whole array for every query would require roughly O(NQ) work, which is far beyond what fits in two seconds. We need logarithmic time updates and logarithmic time queries.

The unusual part of the problem is the tiny value range. Every element is one of -2, -1, 0, 1, 2. That restriction creates strong parity structure which is the key to the solution.

A common mistake is to think only about the minimum and maximum subarray sums overall. Parity matters.

Consider:

[2, 2]

The only subarray sums are 2 and 4. The maximum sum is 4 and the minimum sum is 2, but sum 3 is impossible. Looking only at the interval [2, 4] would incorrectly answer YES for 3.

The correct observation is that achievable sums behave continuously inside each parity class. In the example above, all achievable sums are even, and the odd parity class is empty.

Another easy mistake is forgetting that the query may ask for a negative sum.

[-2, -1]

The achievable sums are -2, -1, and -3. The data structure must track both minimum and maximum subarray sums, not only maximums.

Approaches

The brute force approach is straightforward. After every update, recompute all subarray sums and answer future queries by checking whether some subarray equals X.

There are O(N²) subarrays. With N = 2 · 10^5, even a single full recomputation is impossible.

The breakthrough comes from a structural property proved in the official editorial.

Fix a parity, even or odd. Let m be the minimum subarray sum with that parity and M be the maximum subarray sum with that parity.

Then every value of the same parity between m and M is achievable as a subarray sum.

This turns the existence question into:

Does X lie between
minimum-parity-X sum
and
maximum-parity-X sum?

So the entire problem becomes maintaining, under point updates:

minimum even subarray sum
maximum even subarray sum
minimum odd subarray sum
maximum odd subarray sum

A segment tree can maintain exactly these values.

To output an actual segment, the editorial suggests binary searching on the answer endpoints. A segment tree can answer whether a range contains some subarray with sum X, so we can first find the smallest right endpoint R, then the largest left endpoint L inside that prefix.

The segment tree node must store parity-aware information for prefixes, suffixes, and subarrays. When two children are merged, every cross-boundary subarray is formed by a suffix of the left child plus a prefix of the right child.

Segment Tree State

For each node and each parity p ∈ {0,1}, store:

min_pref[p], max_pref[p]
min_suf[p],  max_suf[p]
min_sub[p],  max_sub[p]

where parity is taken modulo 2 on the sum.

Also store the total segment sum.

Merging Two Children

Suppose we merge left child A and right child B.

  1. Compute the total sum.
  2. Compute prefix information.

A prefix is either entirely inside A, or all of A plus a prefix of B. 3. Compute suffix information symmetrically. 4. Compute subarray information.

A subarray is either:

  • entirely inside A,
  • entirely inside B,
  • a suffix of A plus a prefix of B.
  1. For every parity combination (p1, p2), the merged parity is
(p1 + p2) mod 2

and we update minimums and maximums accordingly.

Answering Existence

  1. Let p = abs(X) % 2.
  2. Query the whole array.
  3. Retrieve:
min_sub[p]
max_sub[p]
  1. A solution exists exactly when
min_sub[p] <= X <= max_sub[p]

because every value of that parity between the two extremes is attainable.

Recovering a Segment

  1. Binary search the smallest index R such that the prefix [1, R] already contains a subarray summing to X.
  2. Fix that R.
  3. Binary search the largest index L such that the range [L, R] still contains a subarray summing to X.
  4. The resulting interval is a valid answer.

Why it works

The segment tree correctly maintains the minimum and maximum subarray sums of each parity because every subarray in a merged segment belongs to exactly one of three categories: left child, right child, or crossing the boundary. The merge step examines all three.

The key theorem states that for a fixed parity, every value between the minimum and maximum achievable sums of that parity is itself achievable.

Once the tree provides the parity-specific extrema, existence reduces to a simple interval check. The binary searches are valid because they repeatedly ask whether a region already contains some solution, which is exactly the predicate maintained by the tree.

The code above implements the parity-aware segment tree described earlier. Each node stores the minimum and maximum prefix, suffix, and subarray sums for both parity classes.

The merge routine is the heart of the solution. Every valid subarray in the parent segment is either entirely inside one child or crosses the boundary. Cross-boundary sums are generated by combining suffix information from the left child with prefix information from the right child.

The parity calculation uses XOR because parity modulo two adds exactly like XOR.

The editorial's full accepted solution reconstructs actual endpoints using additional binary searches over segment tree queries.
