For each segment, the best available road depends on a threshold: among all roads with capacity at least w, we want the minimum time. As w decreases, more roads become available, so the best value for each segment only improves over time.

This leads to a global sweep over all roads and queries sorted by capacity or weight. We activate roads in descending order of capacity, maintaining for each segment the best time seen so far. Algorithm Walkthrough

We treat every road as an event that becomes usable once the car weight threshold drops below its capacity. We also treat each query as an event where we want the current best total travel time.

  5. Maintain a running sum of all best[i]. This sum represents the total travel time of the best feasible route under the currently activated road set. When a segment’s best value improves, we update the sum accordingly.

Why it works comes from a monotonic activation property. At any point in the sweep, the set of activated roads is exactly those with capacity at least the current threshold.
