Instead of iterating over intervals, we invert the viewpoint. Fix an element x and ask in how many query-induced intervals x becomes the second maximum. For x to be second maximum in an interval, two conditions must hold simultaneously. First, the interval must contain at least one element greater than x, otherwise x becomes the maximum and cannot be second maximum. Second, among all elements smaller than the maximum element of that interval, x must be the largest, meaning no element larger than x can appear in the interval except the chosen maximum.
This transforms the structure into a constraint problem over “elements greater than x”. Those elements act as separators: any interval containing x and multiple greater elements is invalid, because the second maximum would be determined by a value larger than x.
