A tourist starts at a fixed hotel location, which is node N. He has a single day with a strict time budget, from morning until midnight, which translates into a fixed number of available minutes. He may move along roads, and whenever he reaches a tourist spot, he can choose whether to spend time there and gain its happiness. Each chosen spot can be visited at most once. He does not need to return to the hotel.
The task is to choose an order and a subset of tourist spots so that the total travel time plus visiting time does not exceed the budget, while the sum of happiness values is maximized.
The key structural constraint is the mismatch in scale. The graph is large, but the number of interesting nodes is tiny. This immediately suggests that we cannot reason about arbitrary paths over all nodes, but only about shortest paths between a small subset of special nodes.
The time budget is effectively constant (around 16 hours, so under 1000 minutes). Any solution that explores paths explicitly in the graph space is impossible, since even a linear traversal per subset would explode. This rules out any approach that tries to simulate routes directly on edges.
A naive but important edge case appears when the optimal route involves skipping a nearby high-happiness node in favor of a far one because travel structure makes the detour expensive. For example, if two attractions are close in graph distance but have large visiting times, they might be worse than a far but quick-to-visit alternative. A greedy “always take best ratio” approach fails here because travel cost is path-dependent and not local.
Approaches
A direct brute-force approach would try every possible order of visiting the P attractions. For each permutation, we would compute the travel time by running shortest paths between consecutive nodes in the route and add visiting times. This already requires precomputing shortest paths between all pairs of special nodes. Even if we assume those distances are known, the number of permutations is P!, which at P = 20 is completely infeasible, on the order of 2.4e18 sequences.
Even reducing this to trying all subsets still leaves ordering unresolved, and the ordering is exactly what determines travel cost.
The key observation is that travel costs depend only on shortest paths between nodes, not on intermediate structure. Once we compress the graph into a complete weighted graph over the P attractions plus the hotel, the problem becomes a traveling salesman style dynamic programming task with a knapsack constraint on time.
We compute shortest paths from the hotel and from each of the P attractions to all nodes using Dijkstra. This gives us a complete distance matrix among the P + 1 special nodes. From there, the problem reduces to selecting an optimal walk over these nodes, where each move has a known cost, and each node contributes happiness and time cost once.
This leads naturally to bitmask dynamic programming: the state represents which attractions have been visited and the last visited attraction. Transitions try adding a new unvisited attraction, updating time cost and accumulated happiness.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Run Dijkstra from the hotel node N to compute shortest travel times to all nodes. This gives the cost of reaching any attraction as a starting point.
- Run Dijkstra once from each of the P attractions. This produces shortest path distances between every pair of attractions. This step converts the original graph into a fully connected weighted graph over P + 1 important nodes.
- Store the travel times in a matrix dist where dist[i][j] is the shortest time from node i to node j, and include the hotel as an index.
- Define a DP state dp[mask][i], meaning the minimum total time needed to start from the hotel, visit exactly the set of attractions in mask, and finish at attraction i.
- Initialize the DP by considering each single attraction i. The cost is dist[hotel][i] plus the time spent at that attraction. The happiness for these states is just f[i].
- Transition by trying to extend a visited set. From dp[mask][i], try going to any unvisited j. The new state is mask ∪ {j}, ending at j, with cost increased by dist[i][j] plus the visiting time t[j]. We take the minimum possible time for each state.
- After filling DP, scan all states. For every dp[mask][i] that does not exceed the time budget, compute the total happiness of mask and track the maximum.
The reason this works is that once the graph is compressed into shortest path distances between important nodes, the only remaining decision is ordering of a small set. The DP enumerates all valid orders implicitly while keeping only the best (minimum time) way to reach each subset-ending configuration. This prevents redundant exploration of equivalent permutations that differ only in internal structure but not in chosen subset and ending point.

Edge Cases
