For example, if we are at index 1, and indices 2 and 3 are both available, choosing 3 immediately may block 2 in some configurations if we are not careful about connectivity. This kind of situation appears in small chains like a = [?, ?, ?] where skipping an intermediate node too early can force an invalid completion.
Another edge case arises when n is small. For n = 1, the answer is trivial. For n = 2, we must go 1 to 2. For n = 3, both paths 1-2-3 and 1-3-2 are allowed, and only the lexicographic ordering of values decides which is correct. These small cases are important because they reveal that the structure is not a fixed path, but a constrained Hamiltonian walk.
Approaches
A brute-force idea is to treat this as a graph problem where each index is a node and edges exist between nodes whose indices differ by at most 2. We then attempt to enumerate all Hamiltonian paths starting from 1 and ending at n. For each valid path, we construct the resulting sequence b and take the lexicographically minimum.
This is correct in principle, but the number of Hamiltonian paths grows exponentially. Even for moderate n, the branching factor is up to 4 (i ± 1, i ± 2), and we are effectively exploring all permutations consistent with local adjacency. This quickly becomes infeasible, since even n = 30 already leads to astronomical possibilities.
The key observation is that the graph structure is extremely restricted. Each node only connects to indices within a distance of 2, which means the unvisited nodes always form a very structured shape: at any time, the frontier of reachable unvisited indices is small, and from the current position, there are at most four candidate next moves. More importantly, the graph never allows long-range dependencies. Whether a choice is valid can be decided locally, because there is no way to “jump over” large disconnected regions.
This allows a greedy construction. At each step, we look at all currently reachable unvisited neighbors (those within distance 2 of the current position), and we pick the one with the smallest a value that still keeps the walk feasible. In this problem, feasibility turns out to be guaranteed by the structure itself: the remaining unvisited nodes always remain connected under the same movement rules, so any locally valid move does not destroy global reachability.
Thus we reduce the problem from enumerating paths to repeatedly selecting the best among at most four candidates per step.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We maintain the current position and a visited array. The idea is to always extend the path one step at a time until all indices are used.
Steps
- Start at index 1, mark it visited, and initialize the answer array b with a[1]. This is forced by the problem statement.

Why it works
The crucial property is that the graph formed by edges |i − j| ≤ 2 is dense enough locally that no greedy choice can isolate an unvisited node. Any node has connections to its nearby indices, so removing a node from future consideration never partitions the remaining unvisited indices into unreachable components. Because of this, every step can be treated independently: choosing the smallest available neighbor always leads to a complete valid completion of the path.
This turns the problem into a purely greedy construction where lexicographic order aligns with local optimal choices.
