The useful observation is that every missing cell inside the rectangle must eventually be colored by some operation. There is no way around paying for it. The only possible optimization is reducing the number of extra cells colored outside the rectangle before the spread reaches it.
If we already have a colored pixel inside the rectangle, we can fill the entire rectangle without any outside work. If we have a colored pixel outside, we only need to connect it to the rectangle. The cheapest connection is the shortest Manhattan path to the rectangle. Algorithm Walkthrough
- Store every initially colored pixel in a set. The set avoids counting duplicate pixels twice and lets us count how many already colored cells lie inside the target rectangle.
- Compute the rectangle area as
(X2 - X1 + 1) * (Y1 - Y2 + 1). Subtract the number of existing pixels inside the rectangle. These are the cells that still need to be colored. - Initialize the best extra connection cost with the ground operation. Choosing a ground cell directly under any column of the rectangle requires coloring all cells below the rectangle in that column.
- For every existing pixel outside the rectangle, compute its Manhattan distance to the closest cell of the rectangle. If the distance is zero, the pixel is already inside. Otherwise, the last move enters the rectangle, so the number of extra cells outside is
distance - 1. - Add the minimum extra connection cost to the number of missing rectangle cells. This is the minimum total number of new pixels.
Why it works: every solution must color every missing rectangle cell, because no operation can color a cell without paying for it. The only remaining choice is how to get a first colored pixel into the rectangle. The algorithm checks every possible source of such a connection, including all initial pixels and the ground row. The shortest possible connection from a source is a Manhattan path, and the algorithm counts exactly the cells on that path that lie outside the rectangle.
