Problem Understanding

The key difficulty is that we are not minimizing distances, which is the usual multi-source BFS problem. We are trying to make some location in the tree as far as possible from all flowers that remain after deletions.

A subtle edge case appears when the best location is itself a flowered vertex.

A brute-force view is useful first.

Pick some vertex $v$. Every flower within distance $D$ from $v$ must be removed, otherwise that flower would still be a remaining flower too close to $v$.

If $cnt(v)\le k$, we can delete all those flowers. Any extra deletions can be spent elsewhere. Then every remaining flower is farther than $D$ from $v$.

The brute-force method computes $cnt(v)$ for every vertex and every radius check by exploring the tree. Even a single feasibility test would be too expensive.

The observation that unlocks the problem is that every feasibility test is only asking for counts of flowered vertices inside a distance radius. This is exactly the kind of query that centroid decomposition handles efficiently.

For a fixed radius $D$, each flower contributes +1 to every vertex whose distance to that flower is at most $D$. After all contributions are added, a vertex value equals $cnt(v)$.

Centroid decomposition allows us to count, for any vertex $v$, how many flowered vertices lie within distance $D$ of $v$ in $O(\log^2 n)$ time.

Since feasibility is monotonic, if distance $D$ is achievable then every smaller distance is also achievable. This gives a binary search on the answer.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Preprocessing

Build a centroid decomposition of the tree.

For every vertex, store the chain of centroid ancestors. For each ancestor centroid, store:

  1. The distance from the vertex to that centroid.
  2. Which centroid child-subtree the vertex belongs to.

For every centroid, also store all distances from flowered vertices to that centroid.

For every centroid child-subtree, store all distances from flowered vertices inside that subtree to the centroid.

All these distance lists are sorted.

Feasibility Check for Radius D

  1. For every vertex $v$, initialize its flower count as zero.
  2. Traverse the centroid ancestor chain of $v$.
  3. Let the current centroid be $c$, and let $d=\text{dist}(v,c)$.
  4. Every flower whose distance to $c$ is at most $D-d$ contributes to the answer.

Using binary search on the sorted list of flower distances for centroid $c$, add that count. 5. Some flowers were counted even though both $v$ and the flower lie inside the same centroid child-subtree. Those flowers must be removed from the count.

Use the corresponding child-subtree list and subtract its contribution. 6. After processing all centroid ancestors, the result equals the number of flowered vertices within distance $D$ of $v$. 7. If any vertex has count at most $k$, radius $D$ is feasible.

  1. Set the search range to $[0,n]$.
  2. Check the middle distance.
  3. If feasible, move right.
  4. Otherwise move left.

Why it works

For a fixed radius $D$, a flower must be removed if and only if it lies within distance $D$ from the chosen vertex. The number of required deletions is exactly $cnt(v)$.

A vertex is achievable precisely when $cnt(v)\le k$. The feasibility test computes this value exactly using centroid decomposition. Every flower is counted once through the centroid ancestor chain, and the subtree subtraction removes all overcounting.

The feasibility predicate is monotonic. If a vertex can be made farther than $D$ from all remaining flowers, then it can certainly be made farther than any smaller radius. Binary search on $D$ is valid.

The centroid decomposition is built once. For every vertex we record its path through centroid ancestors, together with the distance to each centroid and the child-subtree identifier used for inclusion-exclusion.

The arrays all_dist store distances from every flower to a centroid. The arrays sub_dist store distances from flowers inside a particular centroid child-subtree. Both are sorted once during preprocessing.

The function count_near(v, D) computes how many flowers are within distance D from vertex v. Each centroid ancestor contributes a binary-search count from all_dist, and the matching subtree contribution is subtracted.

The feasibility test only needs to know whether some vertex requires at most k deletions. As soon as such a vertex is found, the check succeeds.

The binary search uses the monotonicity of the predicate.
