The key observation is to invert the perspective. Instead of asking where each node goes, we ask what structure is required so that every node can eventually “flow” into the global maximum. The transition rule depends only on local maxima, so increasing d only ever adds new edges or strengthens reachability. This monotonicity suggests binary search on d.
For a fixed d, the process is equivalent to asking whether every index can reach the position of n in a directed graph defined by local maxima pointers. If we precompute the next pointer for each node efficiently, we can check reachability to the maximum using reverse graph traversal or functional graph propagation.
The crucial optimization is that for a fixed d, the “best in window” structure can be maintained using a segment tree or sparse table to answer range maximum queries. This reduces each transition from O(d) to O(log n) or O(1) depending on implementation. Then checking all nodes is O(n), making each feasibility check efficient.

The reason binary search applies is that increasing d can only enlarge windows, so nxt[i] can only move to a value that is at least as large as before, never breaking reachability that already existed.
Why it works

Every node follows strictly the maximum reachable value in its neighborhood, so each step increases or preserves value along edges until a local peak is reached. The global maximum is the only node with value n, so any cycle not containing it must consist of nodes that are locally maximal within their reachable region of radius d. If such a cycle exists, those nodes are permanently trapped because no update can introduce a higher reachable value inside their window. Conversely, if every node can reach posMax in the reverse graph, then no such trapping cycle exists and all paths must terminate at the global maximum.
