For every vertex i, we look at all simple paths u to v such that i is an ancestor of both endpoints. Since the tree is rooted, this means both u and v lie inside the subtree of i, and the unique path between them necessarily passes through i. On top of that structural constraint, we are only allowed to use vertices whose rank is at most the rank of i. Finally, among all such valid pairs (u, v), we want the maximum possible sum of vertex values along the path.

The key difficulty is that the constraint depends on i, but also restricts which vertices are usable inside its subtree. So each query is effectively asking for a best path in a dynamically filtered tree induced by “allowed nodes under i”.

The constraints are large, with total n across test cases up to 5 · 10^5. This immediately rules out any approach that recomputes best paths per node using DFS or dynamic programming in a naive way, since that would be quadratic in the worst case. Even O(n log n) per node is impossible. The structure suggests that each node’s answer must be derived from global processing, likely by activating vertices in a certain order.

A subtle edge case appears when all values are negative. Then the best “path” is not a long chain but a single vertex, because any extension decreases the sum. Another corner case is when a node has the smallest rank in its subtree. In that case, only that node is usable, forcing the answer to collapse to its own value.

A final important observation is that ranks are unique, so we can treat them as a strict ordering over activation.

Approaches

A direct brute-force solution would consider each node i independently. For a fixed i, we would collect all nodes in its subtree whose rank is at most ri, then compute the maximum path sum between any two nodes in this filtered set, where paths must pass through i. That reduces to finding two best downward paths from i inside this filtered subtree. We could run a DFS from i each time, skipping invalid nodes.

This is correct, but extremely expensive. In the worst case, for every node we traverse almost the entire subtree, leading to O(n^2) total work. With n up to 5 · 10^5, this is completely infeasible.

The key insight is to stop treating each i independently and instead process nodes in increasing order of rank. If we imagine gradually “activating” nodes in order of increasing rank, then at the moment we activate node i, exactly the nodes with rank ≤ ri are active. This matches the constraint in the problem.

Now the problem becomes dynamic: as nodes are added, we maintain information about the best path whose highest-ranked node is the current node i. The restriction “i is ancestor of u and v” implies that u and v must lie in different parts of i’s active subtree, so we need to maintain best upward and downward contributions within components of the active forest.

This is a classic dynamic tree connectivity flavor where each activated node merges its children components. The value of a path passing through i is determined by combining the best downward contributions from two distinct child-subtrees. So for each node, we maintain within each active component the best “single path sum starting at that node going downward”, and we combine two largest such values to form a candidate answer for the current rank.

This turns the problem into a union-like process over the tree, processed in rank order, where each activation updates local best path information.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We process vertices in increasing order of rank, since ranks define the constraint boundary.

  1. Sort all vertices by increasing rank. We will activate them one by one in this order. At the moment a vertex i is processed, all vertices with smaller rank are already active and eligible.
  2. Maintain a boolean array active[v] indicating whether a vertex is currently allowed. Initially all are inactive.
  3. For each vertex i, when it becomes active, mark it active and consider it as connecting to any already active children in the tree. This effectively builds a forest induced by active nodes.
  4. For each active node v, maintain a value dp[v], defined as the maximum sum of a downward path starting at v using only active nodes. If v has no active children, dp[v] = a[v]. If it has active children, dp[v] is either a[v] alone or a[v] plus the best dp among its children.
  5. When activating a node i, we look at its active children. We take their dp values and sort or track the top two values. These represent the best two downward paths starting from i into different subtrees.
  6. The best path that uses i as the highest point is obtained by taking i plus the sum of the two largest positive dp contributions from distinct children. If fewer than two positive contributions exist, we fall back to the best single path.
  7. Store this computed value as the answer for i.
  8. Finally, continue until all nodes are processed.

The important implementation detail is that dp values must be maintained bottom-up in the activated structure, so whenever a node becomes active, its dp is immediately computed from already active neighbors in its subtree direction.

Why it works

At any moment, the active nodes form a forest where every edge connects a node to its parent only if both endpoints are active. Because we process by increasing rank, any valid path under the constraint ri is fully contained in this active forest when processing i.

For a fixed i, any valid path u to v must pass through i and must lie entirely in active nodes. Removing i splits the tree into child subtrees, and any valid path crossing i must pick one endpoint from one subtree and the other endpoint from another subtree. The best such choice is exactly the two best independent downward contributions from different children. The dp structure guarantees we always know the best downward path starting from each child subtree, so combining the top two gives the optimal crossing path.

This invariant ensures that when processing i, all candidate paths whose maximum rank is i are correctly evaluated, and no later node can contribute to a path where i is the maximum rank.

For each node, we compute its dp after activation by checking already active children, since they have smaller rank. Edge Cases

One edge case is when all values are negative. In that case, any attempt to extend a path decreases the sum, so the correct answer for every node is just its own value. During activation, dp values from children will never improve the parent’s base value, so best1 and best2 remain non-positive contributions, and the formula correctly falls back to a[i].

When the root is processed, all children may already be active, and the algorithm must correctly pick the two largest dp values among them.
