Algorithm Walkthrough

We process pairs in order, maintaining prefix data structures.

  1. For each value a, we maintain how many distinct b-values have appeared so far among indices with that a. If this number is exactly one, we say a is currently “pure”.
  2. We maintain for each a a list of indices that belong to it, so we can update all of them if its purity changes.
  3. For each b, we maintain two counters: how many indices with this b currently come from pure a-groups and how many come from impure a-groups.
