Any solution must operate on the union graph, not on individual triangles.

Another pitfall is assuming that detecting a 5-cycle can be done by checking neighborhoods of small depth independently. A 5-cycle can easily weave through multiple triangles, so local checks of single triangles or even pairs of triangles are insufficient.

Approaches

A direct brute-force strategy is to build the full adjacency list of the graph and then try every ordered 5-tuple of distinct vertices, checking whether they form a cycle. This is conceptually straightforward: pick five nodes and verify the existence of the five required edges. The correctness is obvious, but the number of choices is on the order of n^5, which is completely infeasible for n up to 10^4.

A slightly more structured brute force is to fix a starting node u and try all paths of length four starting from u using DFS, checking whether they return to u. Even with pruning, this explores roughly O(deg^4) structures per node in dense regions, which still degenerates to hundreds of millions or billions of operations.

The key structural observation is that we do not need to enumerate cycles directly. A 5-cycle exists if and only if there is an edge u-v that can be extended into a path of length three from u to v that avoids repeated vertices. In other words, a 5-cycle u-a-b-c-v-u corresponds to a length-3 path between endpoints of an edge.

This shifts the problem from searching cycles to searching constrained length-3 paths between adjacent nodes. This is still nontrivial, but now we can exploit set intersections and bitset representations to accelerate reachability queries.

The graph size n ≤ 10^4 strongly suggests bitset techniques. With bitsets, adjacency queries become word-level operations, and intersections can be computed quickly. We also exploit the fact that we only need to find one witness path, not count all of them.

We represent adjacency as bitsets and use them to detect potential middle segments of a 3-step path. Then for each candidate edge (u, v), we try to find an intermediate vertex b that is reachable from u in two steps and simultaneously connects to a neighbor of v. This reduces the search space from paths to intersections of precomputed neighborhoods.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We want to transform the 5-cycle condition into a pattern that can be detected using intersections of neighborhoods.

  6. For each such candidate b, we now attempt to extend it toward v. We compute the intersection of N(b) and N(v). Any vertex c in this intersection satisfies b-c and c-v, giving the last two edges of a potential 5-cycle.
  7. If such a c is found, we reconstruct the full cycle by remembering one intermediate node a such that u-a-b holds. We store a witness parent during construction of N2 so that we can recover the actual path rather than just existence.
  8. Once a valid sequence u-a-b-c-v is found, we output the cycle u, a, b, c, v and terminate for that test case.

Why it works

Every simple 5-cycle contains at least one edge (u, v). Fixing this edge splits the cycle into a path of length three between its endpoints. Our construction of N2[u] guarantees that every valid second vertex of such a path appears in it. The final intersection step enforces closure of the remaining two edges into v. Since all steps preserve adjacency constraints exactly, any detected sequence must be a valid simple 5-cycle, and any valid 5-cycle will be discovered when its first edge is processed.

Edge Cases
