Even if we discretize carefully, the number of states grows exponentially with k and the number of overlapping passes. In the worst case, every day could start a pass and interact with all others, leading to an explosion in configurations far beyond any feasible limit.
The key structural simplification is to reverse the perspective. Instead of thinking about “what passes are active right now”, we think about “what is the next uncovered travel day after we make a decision here”. Each decision either pays for the current travel day directly or starts a pass whose contribution can be modeled as covering some future segment of the ordered travel list, but with a cap on how many indices it can cover inside a sliding time window.
This allows us to reformulate the problem as a shortest path over positions in the sorted travel list. We define a DP where dp[i] is the minimum cost to cover all travel days starting from the i-th day onward. From each position i, we have a direct transition to i+1 by paying the fare of day i. For a pass type, if we activate it on day i, we need to determine how many future travel days it can cover within its time window and its quota d. That gives a jump from i to some j, and we add the pass cost c. The subtle part is that this j depends on actual calendar time, not just index distance, so we precompute for each i and each pass type the farthest reachable index j(i, type).

Algorithm Walkthrough
We process the travel days in increasing order and treat each position as a decision point.
- First, sort or assume the travel days are already sorted, and keep two arrays: the calendar time t[i] and the fare f[i]. This ensures we can reason about pass validity windows using simple comparisons.
- Define a DP array dp[i], representing the minimum cost to cover travel days starting from index i. We set dp[n] = 0 since there are no remaining travel days after the last one. This gives a natural right-to-left computation order.
- For each index i and each pass type, compute how far this pass can extend if started at i. We scan forward while the travel day time is within p days of t[i], and we count how many travel days fall into this window until we reach d uses. The resulting endpoint is j(i, type). This step translates the calendar constraint into an index-based jump.
- The recurrence for dp[i] considers two choices. We can pay directly for day i, giving cost f[i] + dp[i+1]. Alternatively, for every pass type, we can buy that pass at day i, paying cost c plus dp[j(i, type)]. We take the minimum over all these options. This encodes the idea that a pass consumes some suffix of travel days and skips ahead.
- Compute dp from n−1 down to 0 so that all transitions are already known when needed. The answer is dp[0].
Why it works comes from the fact that every feasible strategy must make a first decision at the earliest uncovered travel day. Any solution either pays for that day or starts a pass there. Once that decision is fixed, the remainder of the problem is identical but shifted to a later index. The DP captures exactly this decomposition, and the precomputation of j(i, type) correctly encodes all effects of a pass without needing to track overlapping active passes explicitly.
