For each query, we are given two nodes u and v. The “communication” is assumed to travel along the unique path between these two nodes. A chosen connected subgraph “disrupts” this communication if it contains at least one node on that u to v path.
So for each query, we are not asked to construct anything. We must count how many connected subtrees of the original tree intersect the path between u and v, and output this count modulo 998244353.
The number of connected subtrees in a tree is already exponential in general, so the output is large even for moderate n. With n up to 10^5 per test case and total n, q up to 3·10^5, any per-query enumeration is impossible. Even O(n) per query would be too slow; we need something closer to O(log n) or O(α(n)) per query after preprocessing.
A subtle edge case appears when u equals v. In that case, the “path” is just a single node, so any connected subtree containing that node is valid. The answer becomes the number of connected subtrees that include a specific node, which must fall out naturally from the same framework.
Another important subtlety is that we are not dealing with induced subgraphs; we choose nodes and edges as long as the chosen structure is connected. This distinction matters because counting connected subtrees depends only on parent-child structure in a rooted tree DP, not on induced edges.
A naive mistake would be to think we must recompute something like “all subtrees avoiding a path” per query by rerooting or rebuilding DP, but the path changes per query, so any recomputation per query would fail under constraints.
Approaches
We start from a direct viewpoint. A connected subgraph in a tree is a connected subtree. A classical way to count such objects is to root the tree and compute, for each node u, the number of connected subtrees that contain u and lie entirely in its rooted subtree. Let us call this value dp[u].
If u has children v1, v2, … in the rooted tree, then any connected subtree containing u can independently choose, for each child subtree, whether to include nothing from it or include a connected subtree that starts at that child. This gives the standard recurrence:
dp[u] = ∏(1 + dp[child])
Summing dp[u] over all u gives the total number of connected subtrees in the tree.
Now we reinterpret the query condition. A subtree is bad for a query (u, v) if it avoids every node on the path between u and v. So the answer is:
total connected subtrees minus connected subtrees that avoid all nodes on the path.
The key observation is that if we remove all nodes on the u to v path from the tree, the remaining nodes break into disjoint components, each of which is still a tree. Any connected subtree that avoids the path must lie entirely inside one such component.
Inside each such component, the number of connected subtrees is exactly the sum of dp[x] over nodes x in that component, because dp[x] counts connected subtrees “rooted at x” inside its downward structure, and this remains valid when the connection to the removed path is cut.
So the complement of the path contributes simply as the sum of dp[x] over all nodes x that are not on the u to v path.
This reduces every query to:
answer = total_dp_sum − sum(dp[x] for x on path(u, v))
So the entire problem becomes a tree path sum query over node weights dp[x], where dp[x] is fixed after preprocessing.
We compute dp with one DFS. Then we need fast path sum queries, which is a standard heavy-light decomposition or any LCA-based path decomposition structure.
The bottleneck is thus reduced from enumerating subtrees to answering weighted path sums.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Root the tree at node 1 and compute dp[u] for every node using a postorder traversal. For each node, dp[u] is the product over its children of (1 + dp[v]). This encodes all connected subtrees that are fully contained in the subtree of u and include u.
- While computing dp, also accumulate total_dp = sum of dp[u] over all nodes. This represents all connected subtrees in the entire tree.
- Build a heavy-light decomposition of the tree. Each node is assigned to a position in a base array such that any path can be decomposed into O(log n) segments.
- Construct a segment tree (or Fenwick tree) over this base array storing dp[u] values. This allows efficient range sum queries over HLD segments.
- For each query (u, v), compute the sum of dp[x] over all nodes x on the unique path between u and v using HLD. This is done by repeatedly jumping from deeper chain heads toward the LCA, summing segment ranges along the way.
- Output answer = total_dp − path_sum(u, v), taken modulo 998244353 and normalized to be non-negative.
Why it works
The dp value of a node is purely local to its rooted subtree structure and does not depend on queries. When we remove a set of nodes (the path), we do not change how dp is defined for nodes outside that set; we only remove some nodes from being counted in the final sum.
The only connected subtrees that are excluded are exactly those that contain at least one node on the path. Subtrees avoiding the path are fully contained in the remaining forest, and their contribution is exactly captured by summing dp over nodes outside the path. This partitions all connected subtrees into two disjoint groups: those that intersect the path and those that do not, ensuring the subtraction is exact.

Edge Cases
