Once we express the tram’s route as a sequence of stations, its motion becomes a simple back-and-forth traversal over that sequence with constant edge time. This removes the tree entirely from the dynamic part of the problem and replaces each tram with a 1-dimensional line with periodic movement.

Once this is done, the problem becomes a shortest path over stations, where transitions happen through trams. From a station u, we want to know the earliest time we can board any tram that visits u, and from that boarding event we can reach any other station on the same tram with a deterministic travel time. This suggests Dijkstra on stations, but each relaxation must be computed carefully using precomputed tram routes.

The efficiency gain comes from precomputing, for every tram, the ordered list of stations on its path and the arrival times along that path in both directions. Then, for any station on that tram, we can compute all future visit times using modular arithmetic on a fixed cycle. Algorithm Walkthrough

We first convert the tree structure into explicit paths for each tram. For each tram i with endpoints si and ei, we compute the unique tree path between them. This can be done using parent pointers and LCA or by DFS preprocessing. We store the path as an ordered list of nodes P[i].

We also compute the travel time along that path. If consecutive nodes are indexed j and j+1, each step costs ki, so the forward traversal time to position j is j · ki.

The tram moves back and forth along this list, so one full cycle is forward then backward, with period equal to 2 · (len(P[i]) − 1) · ki.

Next we build a mapping from each station to the list of trams that visit it, and for each tram we store the index of each station inside its path.

We then run Dijkstra over stations, where dist[x] is the earliest known time to reach station x. We initialize dist[a] = 0.

At a station u removed from the priority queue, we try to improve all reachable stations using every tram that visits u. For a tram i, we compute the earliest time ≥ dist[u] when the tram is at u. Why it works

At any station, the algorithm always considers the earliest possible boarding time for every tram that can be used. Because tram motion is fully deterministic and periodic, any later boarding is never better than the earliest feasible boarding from the same station and tram. Dijkstra’s greedy selection ensures that once a station is processed at its minimum time, no later alternative route can improve it, since all subsequent routes would either depart later or traverse non-negative travel times along trams.
