The key insight is that all required quantities are additive over segments. This allows prefix sums so each query reduces to O(1) arithmetic.

Algorithm Walkthrough

1. Precompute prefix aggregates

We build prefix arrays for Sx, Sy, Sxx, and Sxy. Each position stores cumulative sums up to that index. This allows any segment sum to be computed as a difference of two prefix values.

The reason this is valid is linearity: sums over disjoint intervals combine without interaction.

2. Extract segment statistics per query

For a query [L, R], we compute:

n = R − L + 1

Why it works

The prefix arrays store cumulative contributions so each query becomes a constant-time extraction of segment sums. Each regression system is built from these sums without revisiting raw data.

The determinant computation directly implements the closed-form solution of the 2×2 normal equations. The ordering of terms matters because floating point precision is sensitive when subtracting close values, so computing determinant as AC − B² is stable and minimal.

The final prediction is just evaluation of the fitted linear model.
