A brute-force interpretation treats the graph explicitly. After each birth, we construct the new adjacency list for the node and then run a multi-source BFS or all-pairs BFS to recompute shortest paths. The key structural observation is that the rule defining new nodes is linear over adjacency sets. Each node’s neighborhood is obtained as a symmetric difference of its parents’ neighborhoods. This is exactly XOR behavior over characteristic bit vectors.

Because the initial number of pigs and giraffes is at most 8 each, every pig can be represented by an 8-bit vector describing which giraffes it connects to, and every giraffe by an 8-bit vector describing which pigs it connects to. The inheritance rule preserves this representation: every new node is the XOR of two existing vectors of the same side. This means every node of a given type lives in a vector space over GF(2) of dimension at most 8.

So even though we may create up to 100000 nodes, there are at most 256 distinct pig “states” and at most 256 distinct giraffe “states”. Algorithm Walkthrough

We model every animal by its “type”, which is its adjacency vector encoded as a bitmask over the opposite side. Since each side starts with at most 8 nodes, these masks fit in 8 bits, giving at most 256 possible types per side.

We then build a fixed graph whose vertices are all possible pig types and giraffe types. There is an edge between a pig type p and a giraffe type g if the bit corresponding to that giraffe is set in p’s mask. This graph fully captures all possible interactions between types.

This works because distances between existing nodes do not change when a new node is added. The graph structure between old nodes is fixed; the new node only introduces new pairs.

Why it works

The crucial invariant is that shortest-path distances between any two existing nodes depend only on the precomputed type graph and are unaffected by future insertions. Every node is fully characterized by its type, and types do not change after creation. Since edges are defined only by type compatibility and not by node identity, adding a new node only adds new vertices without modifying existing edges. Therefore, all previously computed shortest-path distances remain valid, and only distances involving the new node need to be accounted for.
