Algorithm Walkthrough

Why it works
Any valid tiling of a 3 by m board can be decomposed into a sequence of left-to-right decisions, each of which covers a bounded number of columns before returning to a “clean” boundary state. Because the height is bounded, the number of possible boundary configurations is finite, and optimal transitions between them stabilize quickly.
