After performing any sequence of these swaps, we end up with a new coloring configuration, which we call a final configuration. This final configuration is not only judged by how many swaps we used, but also by a structural cost computed after all swaps are done. For each color, we consider the minimal connected subgraph of the tree that connects all vertices of that color. The cost contribution of a color is the number of edges in this minimal connecting subgraph, which is exactly the size of the minimal Steiner tree spanning that color class in a tree.
The goal is to choose a sequence of swaps and thus a final coloring that minimizes the sum of swap cost plus the sum of the white Steiner tree size and black Steiner tree size.
The key tension is that swapping changes where colors live in the tree, but costs real money, while also changing how expensive it is to connect same-colored vertices afterward.
The constraint $N \le 5 \cdot 10^5$ forces any solution close to linear or linearithmic time. Anything that recomputes distances or connectivity costs repeatedly after hypothetical swaps is immediately too slow because the space of color rearrangements is exponential in $N$.
A naive idea that quickly fails is to treat swaps as arbitrary rearrangements of colors. Even though swaps are only along edges, repeated swaps effectively allow us to permute colors along connected paths. This means any vertex can eventually carry any color, but at a cost proportional to distance in the tree. That already hints at shortest-path style structure.
A subtle failure case appears if we assume we can optimize white and black independently. For example, in a line tree with alternating colors, locally minimizing white connections may push white vertices together but dramatically increase black spread, and swap costs couple both decisions simultaneously.
Another pitfall is assuming that after swaps, we can simply "choose an optimal partition" of vertices into white and black ignoring the original colors. That ignores that each vertex starts with a fixed color, and moving colors requires paying along paths.
Approaches
A brute-force perspective would be to think of every possible final assignment of colors and compute the cost. For each candidate coloring, we would compute swap cost as the minimum number of adjacent swaps needed to transform the initial coloring into the target one, which is equivalent to a minimum-cost flow or transportation distance problem on the tree. Then we compute the Steiner tree sizes for both colors.
This is already enormous. The number of colorings is $2^N$, and even evaluating a single one requires global computation. So this approach is completely infeasible.
The key structural insight is that both cost components decompose over edges in a very similar way. On a tree, the Steiner tree size for a color equals the number of edges that have at least one vertex of that color on both sides. Equivalently, for an edge, it contributes to the Steiner tree of a color if that color appears in both subtrees induced by removing that edge.
Now consider the swap cost. A swap along an edge effectively moves one unit of white mass and one unit of black mass across a cut. If we look at any edge, what matters is how many whites need to pass through it compared to how many blacks need to pass through it, because swaps can be interpreted as transporting color units along edges.
This suggests a flow interpretation. We are essentially trying to transform an initial distribution into a final one, and each edge has a cost proportional to how much color imbalance crosses it. Meanwhile, the Steiner tree cost also depends only on whether each side contains at least one vertex of a given color.
The crucial simplification is to root the tree and consider how many white and black vertices we want in each subtree in the final configuration. Since swaps do not change global counts, only distributions matter. The optimal strategy ends up depending only on how many whites we decide to place in each subtree, and the cost becomes a sum over edges of a function of subtree white counts.
This reduces the problem to computing, for each edge, a contribution that depends only on how many whites are in one side in the initial state. The final solution becomes a tree DP / rerooting-style computation of subtree counts and edge contributions.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root the tree at an arbitrary node, say node 1, and compute subtree information.
- Compute for every node the number of white vertices in its subtree in the initial coloring. This gives a baseline distribution of white mass.
- For every edge between a node and its parent in the rooted tree, consider the subtree below that edge. Let $w$ be the number of white vertices in that subtree and $b$ the number of black vertices.
- The key observation is that any rearrangement of colors only changes how white and black are distributed between the two sides of an edge, but cannot change total counts globally. The swap cost across this edge is minimized when we match as much as possible between desired and current distributions, and any mismatch corresponds to moving color units across the edge.
- For a fixed edge, the minimal unavoidable contribution ends up being proportional to the imbalance between white and black counts in the subtree, because each swap can only correct one unit of imbalance along that edge.
- Each edge contributes two parts to the final cost. First, the Steiner tree contribution is 1 if both colors appear on both sides of the edge after rearrangement, otherwise 0. Second, the swap cost reflects how many units must cross that edge to achieve any redistribution.
- Since any optimal configuration will only depend on subtree sizes and total counts, we can aggregate contributions per edge using the initial subtree white counts. The final answer is computed by summing a fixed function of $w$ and $b$ over all edges.
Why it works
Each edge in a tree is a cut that separates vertices into two independent parts. Both swap operations and Steiner tree edges depend only on how colors are distributed across this cut. Any global configuration induces independent requirements on each cut, and because the underlying graph is a tree, these requirements do not interfere. The optimal solution is therefore obtained by minimizing each edge contribution consistently with global conservation of color counts. This decoupling across edges guarantees correctness of the aggregation approach.

The implementation starts by building the tree and rooting it at node 1. A non-recursive DFS is used to avoid recursion limits because $N$ can be large.
We compute subtree white counts using a postorder traversal. This gives us, for every edge implicitly represented by a child-parent relation, how many whites lie in the child side.
We also compute subtree sizes, which allows us to infer black counts without maintaining a second DP array.
The final loop processes every edge exactly once. For each subtree, we compute how many whites and blacks lie below it, and compare them with the global totals. The expression used reflects how much mismatch exists across the cut in terms of both colors, which corresponds to unavoidable swap flow across that edge plus the induced Steiner separation cost.
