However, each query may touch up to n elements, so with up to 2 · 10^5 queries, the total work becomes on the order of 10^10, which is far beyond feasible limits.
The key observation is that for any fixed segment, the only values that matter relative to x are the closest value not greater than x and the closest value not smaller than x. Every other element is strictly farther than at least one of these two boundary candidates. This reduces the problem to finding, inside a dynamic range, the predecessor and successor of x, and then counting occurrences of those values if they achieve the same minimum distance.
Because we need both range queries and point updates, a segment tree with sorted containers or a more complex order-statistics structure is possible but often heavy to implement efficiently. A simpler and sufficiently fast approach is square root decomposition, where the array is split into blocks. Each block maintains its elements in sorted order, allowing binary searches inside blocks.
For a query, we examine each block that intersects the range. From each block we extract its local best predecessor and successor candidates relative to x. Across all blocks, we merge these candidates to obtain the global predecessor and successor for the range. Once the minimum distance is known, we perform another pass over blocks to count how many elements equal the winning value(s).
Updates only affect one block, where we remove the old value and insert the new one in sorted order.
