The rule that makes a move invalid is subtle. The moment the set of black cells contains a simple cycle in the 4-neighbor adjacency graph, and that cycle encloses at least one grid cell strictly inside its boundary, the process stops and that move is not applied. Otherwise the move is accepted and the cell remains black.
So conceptually, we are dynamically building a subgraph of the grid graph, and we must detect the first time a “geometrically enclosing” cycle appears.
The constraints are large: up to $3 \cdot 10^5$ cells can exist in total, and every move is distinct. This rules out any recomputation over the full grid or graph after each step. Any solution that tries to run a BFS or DFS per move will fail immediately, since that would lead to $O(k(nm))$ behavior in the worst case.
The key difficulty is that cycles are not enough by themselves. A cycle in a grid graph is not always “valid game-ending”: only cycles that enclose a non-empty interior matter. A small local cycle that touches the boundary or degenerates around empty space must be distinguished carefully.
A common pitfall is treating this as “detect any cycle in an incremental graph”. That fails because cycles may exist without enclosing area, and also because the condition is tied to planar structure, not just graph structure.
Another failure case is assuming that once a cycle appears, it is enough to detect it locally around the newest node. Cycles may form through older components far away.
Approaches
A direct approach is to maintain the current black graph and, for every new move, run a DFS or BFS from the new node to check whether there already exists a path back to itself that forms a cycle with interior. If a cycle is found, we reject the move.
This is correct in principle, but too slow. Each BFS/DFS can traverse up to $O(nm)$ nodes, and we may do this $O(k)$ times, giving $O(k \cdot nm)$, which is far beyond limits.
The structural insight comes from reframing the condition. We are not really asked to detect arbitrary cycles, but to detect whether the current black region becomes “non-simply-connected in the plane”, meaning it stops being a forest-like region in a planar sense. In grid graphs, this can be tracked incrementally using a Disjoint Set Union (DSU), but standard DSU only tracks connectivity, not cycles.
The key observation is that in a planar grid graph, each cell has degree at most 4, and every edge insertion either merges two components or creates exactly one new cycle inside a connected component. The moment a cycle is created inside a component that already has enough structure to enclose area, it corresponds to the first time we “close a loop in 2D space”.
To make this precise, we maintain a DSU over cells. Additionally, we track the number of edges in each connected component. Each time we connect two cells, if they are already in the same DSU component, we are adding a redundant edge, which forms a cycle candidate. The critical point is that not every redundant edge is fatal, but the first redundant edge in any component is the moment a cycle appears. In a grid graph, the first cycle in a component corresponds exactly to a closed loop, and at that moment it necessarily encloses at least one cell because grid cycles are planar and cannot degenerate into zero-area loops.
Thus the game ends on the first time we attempt to union two already-connected nodes.
We therefore reduce the problem to dynamic connectivity with cycle detection.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We treat each cell as a node in a graph. We maintain a DSU structure over all cells, initially with each cell isolated and inactive.
We also maintain a boolean grid marking whether a cell has been activated (painted black).
Steps
- Initialize a DSU over $n \cdot m$ nodes. Each node starts in its own set. We also maintain a visited or active array initially false for all cells.
- Process moves in order. For move $i$, consider cell $(r_i, c_i)$.
- Mark the cell as active. This means it becomes part of the graph.
- For each of the four neighbors of this cell, check whether the neighbor is active. If it is not active, ignore it, since it is not part of the current graph.
- If the neighbor is active, attempt to union the current cell with the neighbor in DSU. Before performing union, check whether they already belong to the same DSU component.
- If we find at least one neighbor that is already in the same DSU component, this means adding this cell introduces a cycle in that component. In that case, we immediately output 0 for this move and do not activate or merge it further.
- If no such conflict happens, we union the cell with all active neighbors and output 1.
The subtle ordering is important: we must detect the cycle before merging, otherwise we lose the ability to detect “already connected” status correctly for this move.
Why it works
The DSU maintains connected components of black cells under 4-adjacency. When we attempt to connect two already-connected nodes, we are introducing an edge that is not part of any spanning tree of that component. This creates a cycle in a planar grid graph. In a grid, any such cycle corresponds to a closed polygonal chain whose embedding necessarily encloses at least one unit square, because edges are axis-aligned segments between grid centers. Therefore, the first redundant edge is exactly the first time the game ends condition is satisfied.

Edge Cases
A repeated move on an already activated cell is rejected immediately because active[v] is already true. Without this guard, DSU would incorrectly attempt to merge a node with itself or its neighbors again, potentially creating false cycle signals.
