A subtle difficulty is that the intersection condition couples all chosen paths. Even though each path individually is simple, the constraint that an edge must appear in all $k$ paths forces a global structure that is not obvious from a single path viewpoint.
One important edge case is when $k = 1$. Then we are just choosing a single path, and the answer is simply the maximum weighted path in the tree, i.e. the diameter under modified weights. A naive approach that assumes $k \ge 2$ would break here because it might incorrectly impose artificial restrictions on endpoints.
Another corner case is when the modified edge lies on every optimal configuration for some $k$, meaning a single update can completely change the optimal path. This rules out any solution that assumes stability of the diameter or reuses previous endpoints without recomputation.
Approaches
The brute-force perspective starts from the definition. We choose $k$ pairs of vertices, compute the $k$ paths, and take the intersection of their edge sets. For each candidate choice of $2k$ endpoints, we can compute all paths and intersect them. This is correct but immediately hopeless: even representing all path edges costs $O(n)$, and the number of choices of endpoints grows combinatorially. Even restricting ourselves to meaningful paths does not help, since the tree allows $O(n^2)$ possible paths.
The key observation is that the intersection of multiple simple paths in a tree is itself a single simple path (possibly empty). This follows from the fact that paths in a tree are convex sets, and intersections of convex sets remain convex, hence connected.
So instead of reasoning about $k$ paths, we can reason about the single path $P$ that represents their intersection. The problem becomes: we want to realize a specific path $P$ as the common part of $k$ paths, and maximize the total weight of edges in $P$.
Now fix a candidate path $P = (x \leadsto y)$. For a path to contain $P$, every chosen endpoint pair must “cross” every edge of $P$. This forces all valid endpoints to lie in two endpoint regions induced by $P$: one region attached to $x$, and one attached to $y$. Once this holds, we can freely choose any $k$ vertices in each region and pair them arbitrarily.
The key feasibility condition is therefore purely about endpoint availability: both endpoint regions must contain at least $k$ vertices. This turns the entire problem into choosing a path $x \leadsto y$ that maximizes its weight while satisfying a size constraint depending only on the two ends.
At this point, the structure reduces to a constrained diameter problem. We want the maximum-weight path, but only among paths whose endpoints are “valid” under a threshold condition determined by $k$. The temporary edge update only changes edge weights, not feasibility.
A direct recomputation per query is still too slow, but centroid decomposition gives a way to maintain global best paths under updates. Each path in the tree can be decomposed into contributions passing through centroid nodes, and updates to a single edge affect only $O(\log n)$ centroid layers. For each centroid we maintain the best ways to extend into its decomposed components, but only counting endpoints that satisfy the $k$-feasibility condition.

- Activate only valid endpoints for this query. In centroid structures, ignore contributions originating from invalid endpoints.
- Apply the temporary edge weight update. Update the affected edge in all centroid decomposition levels where it contributes. Each centroid stores partial path sums, so only $O(\log n)$ updates are needed.
- Recompute the best centroid-composed path using the updated values, ensuring both endpoints satisfy the validity condition. The result is the maximum-weight feasible path, which equals the best intersection value.
Why it works
The entire optimization hinges on replacing the original $k$-path interaction with a single intersection path. Once this reduction is made, every valid solution corresponds to a single tree path whose endpoints can support at least $k$ disjoint endpoint assignments. Centroid decomposition guarantees that every path is represented as a combination of at most $O(\log n)$ centroid-local segments, so maintaining best combinations under edge weight changes remains correct and complete. Since every feasible configuration maps to exactly one centroid decomposition representation, no candidate optimal path is ever missed.
