First, for any sequence we can compute its longest increasing subsequence length. Second, for our chosen subsequence, we sum the weights of its elements. The goal is to pick a subsequence that is as “heavy” as possible in terms of weights, but with one restriction: its LIS length must be strictly smaller than the LIS length of the original sequence.
So we are not trying to minimize or compute LIS itself. We are forced to destroy at least one unit of LIS potential while keeping as much total weight as possible.
The constraints are small, with n up to 100. This immediately suggests that an O(n³) or even O(n⁴) approach might still pass, but the structure of LIS strongly hints that a more combinational dynamic programming solution exists. Any solution that explicitly enumerates all subsequences is exponential and unnecessary here.
A subtle corner case appears when the original LIS is 1. In that case every subsequence has LIS at most 1, so the condition f(a′) < f(a) forces f(a′) = 0, which means the chosen subsequence must be empty, giving answer 0. This is a key edge case: without it, a naive solution might incorrectly allow non-empty subsequences when the original LIS is 1.
Another important scenario is when the sequence has many repeated values or is non-decreasing. In that case the LIS equals n, and we must ensure the chosen subsequence drops at least one step of strict increase. A naive “take all large weights” strategy can easily preserve the same LIS and violate the constraint.
Approaches
A brute-force approach would try every subsequence of the array. For each subsequence we compute its LIS and sum of weights. This is correct because it checks all valid candidates, but the number of subsequences is 2ⁿ, which is about 10⁹⁰ for n = 100, far beyond feasibility. Even computing LIS per subsequence in O(n²) does not help.
The key structural observation is that the LIS constraint depends only on relative ordering of values, while weight accumulation is independent of that structure. Instead of thinking in terms of subsequences, we flip the perspective: we decide how many elements we take of each value and ensure we do not preserve a full increasing chain of maximum possible length.
Since values aᵢ are bounded by n, we can think in terms of positions in value space. The LIS of a sequence is determined by chains of increasing values with increasing indices. To ensure f(a′) < f(a), we must break at least one element from every maximum LIS chain of the original structure. That suggests a DP over LIS states.
We compute the LIS structure of the original array first, and define dp over prefixes and possible LIS lengths, tracking maximum achievable weight while controlling whether we match the full LIS or fall strictly below it. The natural state becomes: for each prefix, and each possible LIS length ℓ, we track the maximum weight of a subsequence whose LIS is exactly ℓ or at most ℓ.
We then enforce that final ℓ must be strictly less than LIS(a). This turns the problem into a bounded knapsack over LIS states.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first compute the LIS length of the original array using standard O(n²) dynamic programming. Let this value be L₀. We will only accept subsequences whose LIS is at most L₀ − 1.
We then build a DP table where dp[i][ℓ] represents the maximum total weight we can achieve using only the first i elements of the array, while forming a subsequence whose LIS length is exactly ℓ.
- Initialize dp with −∞, and set dp[0][0] = 0, representing an empty subsequence with LIS 0 and weight 0. This is the only valid starting point because no elements imply no increasing structure.
- Process elements one by one. For each element i, we consider two possibilities: skip it or take it. Skipping preserves all previous states directly, since LIS does not change.
- If we take element i as the end of a subsequence, we must attach it after some previous element j < i where a[j] < a[i]. For each such transition, we can extend any dp[j][ℓ] state to dp[i][ℓ+1]. This increases LIS length by exactly one because we are appending a strictly larger value to an increasing subsequence.
- During transitions, we maximize dp[i][ℓ] over all possible previous j, ensuring we always keep the best achievable weight for each LIS length.
- After processing all elements, we scan all dp states but only consider ℓ from 0 to L₀ − 1. The answer is the maximum dp[n][ℓ] over this range.
The key design choice is that LIS length is treated as a controlled resource. Each time we extend an increasing subsequence, we consume one unit of LIS capacity.
Why it works
Every valid subsequence corresponds to a sequence of choices of whether to include elements and how to chain them into increasing subsequences. The DP enumerates all such chains but groups them by their resulting LIS length. Because every transition that preserves increasing order increments LIS by exactly one, no subsequence can be formed outside these states. The restriction to ℓ < L₀ enforces the required strict decrease in LIS relative to the original sequence.
