A type 2 update adds a value to all of them, and a type 4 query asks for their maximum. A naive approach iterating over adjacency lists per query will immediately fail. Another issue is overlapping updates: a node can receive subtree updates from ancestors and also be part of a child-update from its parent, and these two contributions must be combined correctly.
Approaches
A brute-force interpretation is straightforward. For each update, we traverse either the subtree or the adjacency list of children and directly modify stored values. Queries also traverse the required set and compute maximums on the fly. This is correct because it directly simulates the problem definition.
However, each subtree traversal can touch O(n) nodes, and there can be O(q) such operations. In the worst case, the tree degenerates into a chain and every subtree query becomes linear, giving O(nq) complexity. Even in a balanced tree, repeated subtree walks still accumulate to quadratic behavior.
The key observation is that subtree operations can be mapped to an Euler tour interval, making them range updates and range maximum queries. The hard part is the “children-only” operation, since children of a node are not contiguous in Euler order.
The crucial insight is to split contributions into two layers. One layer handles global subtree effects using an Euler tour plus a segment tree with lazy propagation. The second layer handles “parent-to-child direct contributions,” which can be maintained separately per node as a value that represents how much its parent has directly pushed to it via type 2 operations. We then need a way to query maximum among children efficiently, which can be reduced to maintaining per-node segment tree over children indices in Euler order by grouping children explicitly or maintaining auxiliary segment trees keyed by parent.
A cleaner way to see it is that every node’s value is the sum of subtree-lazy contributions plus a “direct child bonus” coming from its parent. We maintain subtree updates globally, and separately maintain, for each node, a structure that can apply a lazy addition to all its children and query maximum among them. Algorithm Walkthrough
