The key simplification is to rewrite the cost of a chosen set in a way that separates global movement from incremental decisions. If we fix the set and sort it by position, the total travel cost is just the sum of distances between consecutive chosen points starting from 0. This suggests that we can think incrementally: we extend a path from left to right, and at each point decide whether to include the next dish.
Instead of explicitly enumerating subsets, we use a greedy strategy that maintains a set of chosen dishes with minimal total eating time for a given number of dishes. To maximize count, we want to keep total cost small while allowing as many early dishes as possible. Algorithm Walkthrough
We first sort all dishes by their positions. This is necessary because movement is strictly forward, so any optimal route must respect increasing position order.
Next, we iterate through dishes from left to right while maintaining a running structure of chosen dishes. At each dish, we compute the additional time needed to reach it from the previous chosen position, plus its eating time. Why it works
At any moment, we are considering a prefix of dishes in sorted order. Among all ways to choose k dishes from this prefix, the optimal one minimizes total eating time, since travel cost is fixed by the rightmost chosen position and ordering is fixed. Edge Cases
