The key observation is that the process is monotonic in a useful way. Once a segment of the cycle is known to be “survivable” from some energy state, it can be reused. This suggests preprocessing structure over the circular array that supports jumping forward instead of stepping one station at a time.
We transform the problem into prefix energy balance on a doubled array. For each station define net gain $a_i = b_i - c_i$. The cyclist succeeds moving from $i$ to $i+1$ if current energy plus $b_i$ is at least $c_i$, and after traversal energy changes by $a_i$.
Now the key idea is that whether a segment is traversable depends on prefix minimum of accumulated energy. We need to answer, from a starting index, how far we can go before the running sum drops below zero, while also supporting updates. This becomes a dynamic range minimum query on a circular array with prefix sums dependent on updates.
We maintain a segment tree over the doubled array that stores both total sum and minimum prefix sum of each segment. This allows us to “jump” across segments: if a whole segment keeps prefix sum non-negative given a starting energy offset, we can skip it in $O(1)$. Otherwise we descend the tree to find the exact breaking point.
This converts each query into $O(\log n)$ traversal instead of linear simulation. Updates also affect only one position and propagate in the segment tree.

Algorithm Walkthrough

- If we manage to traverse $n$ steps without failure, we conclude the cyclist can cycle forever and return $-1$.
- For updates, when $b_i$ or $c_i$ changes, we update $a_i$ accordingly and update the segment tree at position $i$ (and $i+n$ if using doubling), propagating changes upward.
- Because each query only moves downward in the segment tree a logarithmic number of times, total complexity stays efficient.
Why it works
The segment tree node representation encodes exactly the information needed to validate feasibility of a prefix walk: total energy change and the minimum prefix sum. Any segment can be summarized into these two numbers because traversal only depends on cumulative energy never dropping below zero. The greedy jump is valid because if a segment is safe, then no internal failure exists, so skipping it does not miss the failure point.
