Inside each tree, we can precompute all eccentricities, meaning for each node we know its farthest distance to any other node in its own tree. This allows us to identify which nodes are candidates for producing long paths after merging.

Once the diameter is fixed, only endpoints of farthest-distance layers can form diameter pairs, and those are exactly counted through BFS distance groupings.
