Since each removal requires traversing most of the tree, this becomes O(n) work per vertex, leading to O(n^2) overall operations in the worst case, which is far beyond limits for n up to 3×10^5.
The key observation is that removing a vertex does not create arbitrary structure. In a rooted tree, removing u splits the graph into exactly the subtrees of its neighbors relative to u. Each neighbor contributes either a full subtree or the complement of u’s subtree. This means we only need subtree sizes and subtree value sums, not recomputed components.
Once we root the tree, every edge defines a parent-child relationship. For a node u, all edges to children correspond to components that are exactly those child subtrees. The only remaining component is the “rest of the tree,” which is the entire tree excluding u’s subtree.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We fix an arbitrary root, for convenience vertex 1, and treat the tree as directed away from it.
- Compute subtree sizes and subtree sums using a DFS from the root.
For each node u, we compute size[u] as the number of nodes in its subtree and sum[u] as the sum of values in that subtree. This preprocessing gives us full information about any “downward” component. 2. For every node u, we interpret the effect of removing u in terms of its adjacency structure in the rooted tree.
Each child v of u becomes a separate component equal to the subtree of v. The rest of the tree above u becomes one additional component. 3. For each child v of u, add the contribution size[v] × sum[v] to the answer for u.
This is exactly the cost definition applied to that component since both size and sum are already known from preprocessing. 4. If u is not the root, compute the contribution of the remaining component outside u’s subtree.
This component has size n − size[u] and sum S − sum[u], where S is the total sum of all node values. 5. The total cost for removing u is the sum of all contributions from its children plus the contribution from the parent-side component when applicable. 6. Take the maximum over all nodes u.
The correctness hinges on the fact that removing u does not distort internal structure of any neighbor component, it only separates already well-defined subtrees or complements of a subtree.
The invariant maintained by the preprocessing is that every subtree rooted at any node represents exactly one connected component that would appear in any removal scenario where the cut is above that subtree. Because every possible component after removal is either a child subtree or a complement of a subtree, all required aggregates are already available.
