The condition (a[i] | a[j] | x = x) is a bitmask containment constraint. It forces both a[i] and a[j] to be submasks of x, because any bit set in either array element must also be set in x.

So each query is effectively restricted to a filtered subset of the array: only values a[i] satisfying (a[i] & ~x) = 0 are usable, and within that subset we want the closest pair in XOR distance.

The input sizes are large: up to 10^6 elements and 10^6 queries. This immediately rules out any per-query scanning or any quadratic pairing strategy. Even linear per query would already be too slow at 10^12 operations.

A naive pairwise comparison for each query would also repeatedly solve a “minimum XOR pair in a subset” problem, which is already non-trivial even once. The real difficulty is that the subset changes per query in a bitmask-dependent way.

A subtle failure mode appears when one tries to precompute global minimum XOR pair. That ignores the constraint. For example, if the global minimum XOR pair is (5, 6) but a query x does not contain all bits required by 5 or 6, that pair is invalid even if it is globally optimal.

Another edge case is when the filtered subset has fewer than two elements. In that case the answer must be -1, even though globally the array may have many pairs.

Approaches

The brute-force approach is straightforward: for each query, scan all pairs (i, j) and check both whether they are valid under x and compute their XOR. This is correct because it explicitly evaluates all possibilities. The issue is cost. Each query costs O(n^2), and with up to 10^6 queries this becomes astronomically large.

We can reduce one dimension of this problem by observing that the constraint (a[i] | a[j] | x = x) is equivalent to saying both numbers lie in the submask of x. So each query becomes: take a filtered multiset of values and find the minimum XOR pair inside it.

The classical trick for “minimum XOR pair in a set” is to sort values and insert them into a binary trie, maintaining the minimum XOR when inserting each new number. However, that only works for a fixed set. Here the set depends on x, which changes every query.

The key structural observation is that values are bounded by 20 bits (since ai ≤ 10^6). That means every value can be treated as a subset of a 20-bit mask space. Instead of recomputing per query, we can pre-group numbers by their masks and use a bitwise DP over supersets.

We build a structure that, for every mask m, stores the minimum XOR among any two numbers that are submasks of m. This is a classic SOS-DP style idea, where we propagate best answers from subsets to supersets using bit transitions.

Once this table is built, each query becomes O(1): just read the precomputed answer for mask x.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We reinterpret each array value as a 20-bit mask. We want to compute, for every mask x, the best answer over all pairs of numbers that are submasks of x.

  1. Initialize an array best[x] for all masks, setting it to infinity. We will eventually store the minimum XOR among valid pairs for each mask.
  2. Create a bucket structure where bucket[m] stores all array values equal to m. Since values repeat, this is important for correctness.
  3. For every mask m, if bucket[m] has at least two elements, update best[m] using the minimum XOR among pairs inside the bucket. This handles pairs formed by identical exact values.
  4. Now we propagate information upward in the mask space using SOS DP. For each bit position b, and for every mask m, we try to merge information from m ^ (1 << b) into m when that bit is not set in m. The idea is that any valid subset pair for a smaller mask is also valid for larger masks that include it.
  5. After propagation, best[x] contains the minimum XOR among all pairs whose values are submasks of x.
  6. For each query x, output best[x] if it was updated, otherwise output -1.

The key transition is that validity is monotone in the sense of masks: if a pair is valid for some mask, it remains valid for any superset mask. That monotonicity is what allows DP over bit inclusion.

Why it works

Every valid pair (a[i], a[j]) contributes its XOR value to all masks x that contain both numbers as submasks. That means all masks x such that (a[i] | a[j]) ⊆ x. The DP ensures that this contribution is propagated to exactly those masks, and since we take minimum over all contributions, each best[x] ends up representing the minimum XOR among all valid pairs for that query constraint. No valid pair is lost because it is introduced at its exact mask and then propagated upward through supersets.
