Another incorrect direction is to compute maximum weight independent set on the tree and then simply enforce distinct colors afterward. That also fails because the optimal independent set may contain multiple vertices of the same color, and removing duplicates afterward is not locally optimal.

The key difficulty is that the independence constraint is structural on the tree, while the color constraint is global across chosen nodes. The small number of colors suggests that colors, not vertices, should drive the state space.
A brute-force viewpoint is to consider selecting vertices while ensuring no two adjacent nodes are chosen and no color repeats. This would naturally lead to exploring subsets of vertices and validating them. On a tree with n nodes, the number of independent sets alone is already exponential, and adding color uniqueness does not reduce that combinatorial explosion in a controlled way. This approach fails when n grows beyond about 30 or 40.
The main observation is that the only global restriction beyond adjacency is “at most one vertex per color.” Since C ≤ 10, we can treat each color as a choice dimension. For each color, we may pick at most one vertex of that color, or pick none. So instead of thinking in terms of vertices, we think in terms of assigning a representative vertex for each chosen color.
However, adjacency still matters. If we choose two colors, say red and blue, and pick one vertex of each color, we must ensure those two vertices are not adjacent in the tree. This suggests a DP over subsets of colors, where transitions ensure compatibility between chosen representatives.
We root the tree at any node. For each node, we consider DP states that encode which colors are already “used in the current subtree selection,” but a cleaner formulation is to process the tree with DP that tracks, for each node, the best possible selections in its subtree given whether we pick that node or not. Since colors are global, we instead aggregate candidates per color and enforce non-adjacency via tree DP combined with bitmasking over colors.
The clean way to resolve both constraints is to reduce the problem to selecting at most one node per color and ensuring the selected nodes form an independent set. Since colors are few, we can first group nodes by color. For each color, we will eventually pick at most one node, so we precompute compatibility between any two candidate nodes of different colors: they cannot be adjacent in the tree, but more importantly, they must remain non-adjacent regardless of subtree structure.

- For each child, when u is selected, we must ensure that child subtrees do not select nodes adjacent to u that would violate independence.
