An inversion is determined by a pair of positions where the left value is strictly larger than the right value. If we remove elements from the ends, we change which pairs exist, because any inversion that touches a removed element disappears entirely. The goal is to shrink the array from both sides as much as possible while keeping the total inversion count unchanged.

The key constraint is that the sum of array sizes over all test cases is up to 10^6. This rules out any quadratic approach per test case. Even an O(n log n) solution per test case is acceptable, but anything that tries to recompute inversion counts for many candidate subarrays would be far too slow.

A subtle edge case appears when the array is already fully non-decreasing. In that situation, there are no inversions at all, and any subarray also has zero inversions. The problem defines that the smallest valid subarray in this case has size zero, meaning we are allowed to delete everything.

For example, if the array is [1, 2, 3, 4], there are no inversions. The answer is 0 because the empty subarray preserves the inversion count.

Another important edge case is when only one element participates in all inversions. If we incorrectly assume we can always keep at least one element, we may miss that the correct answer can be zero.

Approaches

The brute-force idea is straightforward: try every possible subarray, compute its inversion count, and compare it with the original array. Computing inversions for one array using a Fenwick tree or merge sort costs O(n log n), and there are O(n^2) subarrays, so this becomes O(n^3 log n) in the worst case, which is completely infeasible for n up to 10^6.

Even if we try to optimize by fixing the left boundary and expanding the right boundary while maintaining inversion counts incrementally, we still face the issue that removing elements changes global pair relationships in a non-local way. There is no clean sliding window update for inversion counts because removing one element destroys all inversions involving it.

The key observation is that we do not need to track inversion counts dynamically at all. Instead, we classify each element based on whether it participates in at least one inversion in the original array.

If an element never participates in any inversion, then removing it does not affect the inversion count. If it participates in at least one inversion, then removing it destroys at least one inversion, so the total inversion count strictly decreases. Therefore, any valid subarray must contain every element that participates in some inversion.

This reduces the problem to finding the smallest segment that covers all “inversion-active” positions.

An element is inversion-active if either there exists a smaller element to its right or a larger element to its left. This can be checked using prefix maximums and suffix minimums.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. For each test case, compute a prefix maximum array where prefix_max[i] is the maximum value in a[1..i]. This lets us quickly determine whether a[i] is at least as large as everything to its left.
  2. Compute a suffix minimum array where suffix_min[i] is the minimum value in a[i..n]. This tells us whether a[i] is at most as small as everything to its right.

Why it works

Every inversion involves two positions, and each inversion disappears if either endpoint is removed. If an element participates in at least one inversion, removing it removes that inversion entirely from the count. Conversely, elements that are never part of any inversion do not contribute to the inversion count and can be removed freely without affecting the total.

The prefix maximum and suffix minimum conditions exactly characterize elements that cannot form an inversion with any other element. Everything outside that set is forced into the answer, and the smallest valid subarray is exactly the minimal interval covering all forced positions.

The only subtle part is handling boundaries correctly: when checking the left side of the first element or the right side of the last element, we treat those conditions as automatically satisfied.

Edge Cases

When the array is strictly increasing, every element satisfies the prefix and suffix conditions, so none are marked. The algorithm correctly returns an empty interval because R stays at -1.
