A naive idea would be to try all ways of placing $k-1$ cuts, compute the cost of each resulting partition, and pick the minimum. That immediately becomes exponential in $n$, and even if we fix cuts, recomputing subarray sums per segment leads to $O(n^2)$ per configuration.
A more subtle pitfall is to precompute all subarray sums for the whole array and then try to “assign” them to segments later. That fails because whether a subarray is valid depends on whether both endpoints lie in the same segment, so segment boundaries fundamentally change which subarrays exist.
Edge cases include arrays where all elements are zero, where every subarray has sum zero and costs explode combinatorially, and arrays where $x$ is very large or negative so only rare subarrays match, making optimal partitioning behave differently.
Approaches
The brute-force solution treats segmentation as a combinational choice: pick $k-1$ cut positions, split the array, and for each segment compute the number of subarrays summing to $x$ by enumerating all $O(\text{len}^2)$ subarrays. Even with prefix sums, each evaluation of a segment is $O(n^2)$, and there are $\binom{n}{k}$ ways to choose cuts, which is completely infeasible. Even restricting ourselves to fixed cuts still leaves $O(n^2)$ per segment, giving $O(n^2 k)$ which is too large for $n = 10^5$.
The key observation is that the cost of a segment depends only on its content, and we can precompute the cost of any interval $[l, r]$ in near linear total time for fixed $l$ using prefix sums and a frequency map. Then the problem becomes a partition DP:

This makes computing all $cost(l,r)$ values over all $r$ feasible in $O(n^2)$ total, but we still need to optimize DP.
The final optimization is to reverse perspective: instead of recomputing segment costs repeatedly, we maintain DP while sweeping right endpoint and maintaining contribution of prefix sums. For each fixed number of segments, we can compute transitions using a divide-and-conquer or convex-hull-like monotonic optimization is not applicable here due to lack of convexity, so the standard solution relies on keeping DP and incrementally updating segment costs using prefix frequency state reused across transitions.
Because $k \le 20$, we can afford $O(nk)$ DP transitions if each transition can reuse amortized $O(1)$ updates of the current segment cost, achieved by maintaining prefix sum frequency counts per DP state expansion of the current segment.
The essential idea is that when we extend a segment, the number of valid subarrays ending at position $r$ is determined only by prefix sums up to $r$, so we can build DP while extending segment endpoints and reusing prefix frequency structure rather than recomputing from scratch.

Algorithm Walkthrough

- To support transitions efficiently, we maintain a running frequency map of prefix sums for the current segment and a rolling contribution of subarray counts. When we move a segment boundary, we reset and rebuild the frequency structure, which is feasible because $k$ is small and total amortized updates remain linear per layer.
- After processing all $i$ for a fixed $j$, we move to $j+1$ segments using the computed DP row.
Why it works
Every subarray contributing to the cost of a partition is uniquely determined by its right endpoint and its left endpoint’s prefix sum value. The frequency map over prefix sums fully captures how many valid left endpoints exist for each right endpoint inside a segment. Because DP ensures segments are disjoint and contiguous, each prefix sum structure is valid exactly for one segment at a time. Thus, every transition correctly counts all subarrays inside each segment exactly once, and no subarray crossing a cut is ever counted.

Edge Cases
When the array is entirely zero and $x = 0$, every subarray contributes, so the DP must heavily prefer splitting into many segments to reduce quadratic explosion per segment. The algorithm handles this because frequency maps show extremely high collision counts early, making long segments expensive.
When $x$ is large so that no subarray matches, all segment costs are zero. The DP correctly yields zero regardless of partitioning because all frequency lookups return zero and no cost accumulates.
When $k = n$, every element is isolated, and only length-1 subarrays exist per segment. The DP naturally reduces to summing indicator checks per element, since no segment has length greater than one.
