Problem Understanding
We are given a line of people, initially with no relationships between any pair. Over time, we are given a sequence of constraints. After processing the first i constraints, we are allowed to optionally add extra “friendships” between any previously unconnected pair, with the only restriction that we can add at most i such extra edges.
Friendship is transitive, so once we build a structure of connections, what matters is the connected components in the resulting undirected graph. For each prefix of constraints, we want to know the maximum possible size of a connected component after we are allowed to add up to i extra edges on top of the forced edges from the first i constraints.
The key subtlety is that for each i, we restart from scratch. We do not carry over any added edges or structure from previous i.
The constraints matter only in that they force certain pairs to already be connected before we choose our extra edges.
From a complexity perspective, n is up to 10^5 per test case and total n over all test cases is 2×10^5. The number of constraints d is at most n−1 per test case, and t can be up to 10^4. This immediately rules out anything that recomputes connectivity from scratch per i in O(n + d) time, since that would be O(nd) per test case in the worst case.
The output per prefix is only a single number, the size of the largest reachable component after optimally using i extra edges.
A subtle edge case arises when constraints already form large connected components. For example, if constraints already connect all nodes into one component early, then extra edges are irrelevant. Any solution that blindly assumes every extra edge always increases the answer would overestimate.
Another failure case appears when constraints form many small components, but we have more than enough operations to merge everything. For instance, if after i constraints we have k components and i ≥ k−1, then we can fully connect all nodes into a single component of size n. A naive approach that only considers current component sizes without counting how many merges are possible will miss this saturation effect.
Approaches
The brute-force idea is to simulate each prefix independently. For a fixed i, we take the first i edges, build a graph, compute its connected components, and then try to maximize the size of a component by adding up to i extra edges. The graph structure gives us component sizes s1, s2, ..., sk.
Each extra edge can merge two components, so adding one edge reduces the number of components by one. After at most i merges, the smallest components can be merged greedily into the largest component. The optimal strategy is always to connect components in a way that maximizes the resulting largest size, which is equivalent to taking the largest component and merging it with the next largest components as long as we still have operations.
The brute-force solution recomputes connected components for every prefix, costing O(d·α(n)) or O(dn) depending on implementation, and then performs sorting of component sizes per prefix, which adds O(n log n) per prefix. This becomes O(d n log n), which is far too large when d and n are 10^5.
The key observation is that connectivity under prefix edges evolves incrementally, and the number of components only decreases as we add edges. We can maintain connected components dynamically with a DSU, and additionally track component sizes. For each prefix i, we know exactly how many components exist. The only question left is how to compute the best achievable maximum component size using at most i extra edges.
The critical insight is that the identity of components is irrelevant beyond their sizes. We only need to know how many components exist and their sizes, not their internal structure. Once we know k components of sizes s1...sk, the best possible final largest component is obtained by repeatedly merging the largest available pieces into one root component. This reduces the problem to selecting i components to absorb into a chosen root component, maximizing sum.
Thus the answer becomes: take the largest component as the base, and then add the largest (i + 1 − 1) components if possible, but since each merge reduces component count by one, with i operations we can reduce k to max(1, k−i). So we can combine the largest (k−(k−i)) = i merges, meaning we effectively want to merge the i largest other components into the largest one. This simplifies to sorting component sizes and maintaining a structure for prefix maximum sums.
We can maintain a multiset or sorted structure of component sizes, but since components only merge over time, we can maintain a DSU and also maintain a multiset of sizes. Each union operation updates the multiset in O(log n). We also maintain the largest component size.
However, we also need answers per prefix, not just final state. We recompute DSU incrementally per prefix and compute answer in O(log n) per prefix using a structure that tracks component sizes.
This leads to a standard offline incremental DSU + multiset solution.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We process edges in order, maintaining a DSU over n nodes.
- Initialize DSU where every node is its own component, and store all component sizes in a multiset or sorted structure. Initially, we have n components of size 1. This structure lets us efficiently identify and update largest components.
- For each prefix i from 1 to d, we add edge (pi, qi). If these two nodes are already in the same DSU component, nothing changes. Otherwise we merge the two components and update the multiset: remove the two old sizes and insert their sum. This maintains correct component size distribution.
- After processing the i-th edge, we now know the current component sizes after constraints. Let k be the number of components, and let sizes be sorted in descending order.
- We compute how many merges we can still apply: we have i operations available. Each operation can reduce the number of components by 1, so we can reduce k to at least max(1, k−i).
- The best strategy is to form one giant component by repeatedly merging the largest available components. So we take the largest component as a base, and then add the next i largest components into it. If there are fewer than i additional components, we just merge everything.
- Output the resulting largest possible component size.
Why it works
At any prefix, all components are disjoint sets with known sizes. Any added edge merges exactly two components, so every operation reduces the number of components by one. Since the final goal is to maximize a single component, every operation should be used to merge some component into the eventual target component. The optimal target is always one of the current components, and merging the largest remaining components into it maximizes growth because component sizes are additive and independent. Therefore sorting components by size and greedily attaching the largest available pieces is optimal.

The DSU maintains connected components induced by the first i constraints. The multiset represented by active tracks how many components of each size exist. After each edge, we reconstruct the sorted size list and compute how many components we can merge into a single dominant group using at most i operations. The answer is the sum of the largest min(k, i+1) components.
The most delicate part is recognizing that each operation reduces component count by exactly one, so after i operations we can incorporate at most i additional components into a chosen root component.

Edge Cases
A key edge case is when constraints never connect anything. In that case, after i steps we still have n singleton components. The answer becomes i+1 because we can merge at most i components into one group, which is the expected linear growth.
Another edge case is when constraints immediately create a large connected component. For example, if the first edges already connect all nodes, the answer should stay n for all later i, regardless of available operations. The algorithm handles this because the component list becomes a single element and take=min(1, i+1)=1, producing n.
A third edge case is when the number of components is smaller than i+1. In that case we simply take all components, and the sum naturally equals n. This prevents overcounting beyond full connectivity.
